So is the Maw terrible by design?

So before I swapped over to Alliance I had done about 80% of the Maw scenario on my old Horde main. And honestly it was so boring it took me 3 sittings to get it done. I was just wondering if this was intentional from the developers? Also at what point do we separate stimulating basically hell and making a fun game?

Also side question please tell me there’s some unlock for mounts there?

Shadowlands in general is hell.

You get a mount that works there, but I never got far in Shadowlands and abandoned it for Classic Wow.

The maw abd torghast have been vastly unpopular and I am glad because I didnt enjoy that souless content either.

I dont want blizzard to fail but that needs to be written off as either a bad idea or a poorly implemented one.

I love story, lore and compelling characters and the maw and torghast made me feel so dead inside.

I said it before that it would have been interesting if we were getting glimpses of a hidden society as we go deeper etc, but it was so boring and was just a mindless kill to the end while getting crazy powers.

And the powers were interesting in concept but holy cow was torghast boring.

I mean as a new player it’s sad to hear that. My friend want’s to actually finish Shadowlands. I guess his cousins left him around the second zone he said. I want to try not to think negatively of it, but that intro was terrible. I mean I know what’s going on which is good, but I want to go back to what I have been doing in BFA.

“Players hate the game guys, we did it! Their leaving in record numbers we haven’t seen since WoD!”
-The dev team, probably

BFA was terrible but it still felt like Warcraft.

I don’t have much context for the old stuff, but I liked BFA at least on Alliance side.

Dude jaina had the best story in BFA.

They wanted to make a zone that was intentionally difficult, yes. It was supposed to be grueling.

There are ways to make concepts like that fun. You might groan at this reference, but the Dark Souls series (and its offshoots) do this all time. It’s filled with bosses that can oneshot you.

Problem is, WoW by design can’t facilitate challenge like that. Combat in Dark Souls tests every ounce of your skill. You have to stay on your toes, dodging every attack, because one slip-up will end you.

But in WoW? “Challenge” just means oversaturating the zone with annoying mobs that will either kill you or die based entirely on whether you’re geared enough to take their hits, can hit you from a thousand yards away without you being able to do anything about it even when you’re trying to ride by on a mount, and, if you do engage them in combat, they’ll start evade bugging the moment you try to use the terrain to your advantage.

WoW either needs to overhaul its entire combat system or they should just never attempt anything like the maw ever again.

The horde zones and characters stole the show for me.

I loved bwonsamdi and meeting the vulpera, sethrak, etc.

I really dig the tikki and tribal stuff being mixed with magic.

Everyone hates every expansion when it is out. It is the rules!

However, Shadowlands will never get a reprieve like WOD or some others did/will. And that is mostly because the story is so awful. Nothing has ever felt farther from a warcraft game, ever. Truly, if they took Shadowlands and made it a standalone came and called it The End vs Creation, it would have been better as things like the art and music are pretty good in many cases. The story isn’t even all that bad if it wasn’t meant to be Warcraft lore. They screwed up big time.

I really think I regret criticizing bfa but I do still think it could of been better but Hooboy this expansion made me realize that was the developers trying

the maw is supposed to be unpleasant by design
I did it but I dont go there often
its a shame it wasnt staged to later on become a more pleasant zone

The main plotline of BFA is just as bad as Shadowlands’. It consisted of us standing around for months wondering “why is Sylvanas doing this? Is she evil now?” And then never getting any satisfying answers as her plans crumbled due to traitors and incompetent loyalists anyway.

WoW writing has always been at its strongest when it tells shorter confined narratives. Drustvar and Vol’dun were great. But let’s not pretend Shadowlands doesn’t have those moments as well.

Revendreth is aesthetically satisfying and contains one of WoW’s greatest villains of all time.

And the kyrian storyline is just flat-out a great compelling story arc.

Shadowlands lore only sucks once it tries to redo/undo the lore of Wrath. They’re trying to recapture the magic and failing hard. That’s why Sylvanas has been front and center for so long.

Sending players to hell in-game in light of hellish global events is dumb. The last thing a person going through hell and stress in real life wants… is to be send to a hellscape in a video game.

Poor timing.

Also, heavy mob density, excessive stuns and snares made it all the more stressful.

It was a mistep over all in my opinion. Art imitating life isnt always good. Some ppl live apretty hellish life and something with a more uplifting vibe would have been better.

Once you get to Koritha there is a “quest” that unlocks ground mounts for the maw. Making it much more bearable.
