I really think cities are not the most important constant in the lore that we have. Sure a good location is needed to tell the story in some way but what is more important here is the fact you need solid lore characters with a well build up lore background. And there is the biggest problem the Horde faces right now. We have no good leaders left to represent us properly. The replacements are bad and Blizzard couldn’t be bothered to have them feel something for those still rooting for their faction.
Even a broken clock is right at least twice a day.
Yeah, the Horde’s roster of characters is very dull, despite having a better selection of playable races. This is something Blizzard needs to course correct on. Some characters don’t even seem salvageable anymore (Baine), while others have done nothing since their introduction (Talanji).
That’s not even touching up on, “power disparity,” between Horde leaders and Alliance leaders.
It feels as if Blizzard attempted to go back to the WC3 incarnation of the Horde as a band of honorable savages by getting rid of the problem children in it’s roster, and then stopped there. Maybe even the Devs themselves realize Teldrassil is simply a black mark that’ll never go away. On multiple occasions we’ve seen the Horde image get rehabilitated, only to get dragged through the mud and ashes once more. The factions both desperately need new stories, but the current direction seems to be no stories for either, just plugging in characters into other people’s stories, which is problematic as the Horde roster doesn’t shine. It’d be one thing if it were more fleshed out and impressive, but its not.
You can see this well at the moment. Instead of giving the Horde cast some attention to build it up they keep using the old alliance veterans for everything. It is obvious Blizzard really doesn’t care. And that is sad.
Its not as if the Alliance characters are getting built up much, either. If anything, Alleria’s been getting torn down pretty considerably, to prop Xal’atath up as an antagonist. Dagran is finally out of the crib, but it’s more of an introduction for him than development.
Like I said, with Dragonflight, TWW, even Shadowlands, we saw characters plugged into the stories or other peoples and places. Sometimes they mesh, sometimes they don’t.
We need a story focusing on the factions, for proper growth and development to be a thing. More problematic has been the unnecessary deaths over the years. Rastakan is the prime example, but on some level, I almost wish they’d kept AU Grom around to lead the Mag’har. It’s an old name, and while he may not be our Grom, his older self certainly had matured considerably, or at least, it looked that way from the brief Mag’har recruitment scenario.
If they’d involve Jevan Grimtotem more, I’d be fine with them killing off Baine. I think Jevan would be able to strike a balance between Baine’s idealism, and the more confrontational stand of the Grimtotem, allowing the Tauren to actually have horns, rather than be sacrificial pawns whenever we need to feel bad for the Horde.
Magni and Moira don’t exist
Try being a fan of gnomes, regular or mecha, we haven’t had a character with story development since BFA.
There is a sad irony in that the quest writing and worldbuilding remains one of the high points of this game, but they continue choosing to tell “faction stories” through a few main characters that aren’t really about the factions with characters that don’t seem to be all that likeable.
it does at time feel like the writers are fighting with the fanbase on what should happen.
The fanbase is pretty varied though. Just because a small very vocal group keeps insisting certain characters are unlikeable, doesn’t mean they actually are.
And besides, even in this little corner of the internet, the fans can’t even agree on what they want or like half the time.
Nahnahnahnahnah.
They advertise a two faction game where both factions are heroes.
IDC how insane some guy is. They aren’t delivering what they’re selling.
Okay great. I said nothing about the factions.
I said that just because some people keep insisting everyone hates certain characters in the story doesn’t make it true.
The point is that waxing philosophical villainy about a playerbase with hundreds of thousands of players is a waste of everyone’s time. Yes, there are jerks. The jerks do not in any way matter to this discussion, to the game, or even to their parents
As a Pandaren, I like to remind them of the similar.
You get what you deserve for playing a gnome.
“Every moment I learn more about you, the more I learn how to hate. […] What quality, what virtue do your kind have, that makes you deserving of anything but extinction?”
-Overlord Szaregon
Now that the anti-gnome holy word has been preached, I can move on to the topic at hand.
The Horde already has some characters there that are just not being used. I’d love to have at least half of the Desolate Council questing with me, Talanji as well. Unfortunately she won’t appear while Jaina is on-screen due to a minor case of patricide, and since Jaina HAS to be on screen, we get no Talanji :T
More Bwonsamdi would be great too.
It’s okay to be jealous, I get it. We’ve got superior technology and intellect, most people are.
A deranged mind will often confuse disgust with envy.
I think there’s a fundamental error in comparing two races to a faction.
They could build up Overlord what’s her name from the Mag’har? She seems cool
Dwarves got a lot of attention.
I am fortunate as a Draenei fan that I can say we are neglected the perfect amount so as to not have our lore crumbled into a terrible mess and the stuff we do get every so often is awesome.
I wish every race got their time in the sun, but only enough to get a little tan and not get burned into smithereens but also not so little that they wither away of Vitamin D deficiency.
Horde races in particular have been HEAVILY neglected in TWW, so I’m really hoping to see SOMETHING in the next full content patch. My fingers are crossed for some Goblin content.
