So guess it's time to deal with the Purge

Man, I’m so sick of Jaina and the Kirin Tor being a black hole that sucks up any and every thing that has to do with Mages. I vainly hope that in Midnight we get to see Rommath finally get to flex on the Kirin Tor. But I just have a haunting feeling that they’re going to portray the B.Elves as weak and pathetic people that need the likes of Jaina and Alleria to come riding in to save them.

Dalaran doesn’t have a “regular military”, it never did.

Wrong, from Exploring Northrend:

The Silver Covenant also was not happy having the Horde on Dalaran-with Garrosh Hellscream leading the charge in Northrend, who would be?- and so they aligned themselves with the Alliance.

The Sunreavers are a group of blood elf mages with close ties to Dalaran, though they aligned themselves with the Horde.

Two things: first, it involved people who had nothing to do with Garrosh’s actions.

Second, and more important, it’s one of the best examples of actually morally grey writing in WoW. The fact that both sides have solid points to make means that it can be discussed endlessly. Garrosh blowing up Theramore wasn’t given anything like the sort of justification that was afforded to those who perpetrated the Purge of Dalaran, so when people like you come in and say “Theramore was an atrocity!!!1!”—there just isn’t much response to make and the thread dies pretty quickly.

But if someone says “The Purge of Dalaran was an atrocity,” then Alliance partisans can say “Nuh-uh! It was totally justified because ABC,” and then Horde fans can come back and say “No it wasn’t because XYZ,” and the thread will go on for hundreds of posts.

Kel’Thuzad? Kael’thas? Naively pursuing neutrality without confronting deep-seated hatred and prejudice within their own populace beforehand, leading to an inevitible backlash in which war crimes were committed?

Interestingly all three were sort of mentioned by Jaina while she was leading Dalaran:

Theramore had ceded it’s neutrality to become a beachhead for the Alliance offensive in the Barrens. That made it a legitimate military target.

Not only that it was hosting the Alliance leadership. The Allies bombed Dresden for much less of a reason. Dresden was simply a test run for literally burning a city and they needed one that had not been touched. Dresden had never been bombed because it had no strategic value.

The Allies however were not going to prosecute themselves. The only time a country is ever prosecuted for war crimes is when it loses the war.

I’m not sure what Blizzard could do to address the Purge in a satisfying way for most people. They can’t please everyone, nor should they attempt to in my opinion, but if they are going to bring up the Purge of Dalaran they shouldn’t just ham-fist it away. None of the stories I can think of involving the Purge end particularly well for anyone.

I know some people who become violently angry if they see pineapple on pizza.

The Silver Covenant technically were the ones who murdered the innocent shop keepers and killed the dragonhawks so no one could flee

Watch their retrospection amount to, “Wow, that Drenden thing sure was silly, Dalaran 3.0 needs a Void detector.”

There isn’t a way for Blizzard to address the purge in a satisfying way for, “Most,” people. I think “most” people don’t care to begin with.

At this point, Blizzard should just bring it to full closure.

Have Aethas just confess he found out what was going on, and explain why he chose inaction. At this point in the setting, he’s more likely to get sympathy rather than condemnation, and forgiveness will abound as we all hug, hold hands, and sing Kumbayah around the Sunwell.

They did close it a long time ago, by the Sunreavers and the Horde being allowed back in and choosing not to press the matter. That closed the book. It just didn’t close it in a way that satisfies your requirements.

Then they re-opened it in BFA, when we went to rescue Baine.

To be honest, I’m pretty satisfied? It was a long while ago. I’d moved on. It keeps getting brought up. Apparently, it’s not been closed for some people.

It will never be closed for those whose aim is nothing more than to manufacture outrage.

I had to double check to make sure Erevein hadn’t started this thread. I’d forgotten he started the High Elf one. Zerde didn’t even mention the Purge in the OP.

Watch them frame it as a difficult “choice” like they hilariously did with the seed of Teldrassil story arc. So tone deaf.

oh em gee, I wonder what decision said characters will make?!
