It’s basically a twilight ascendant.
From wowpedia
Originally, Elemental ascendants are Twilight’s Hammer cultists that have been twisted into elemental beings via ‘ascension’. By the time of the Cataclysm the Ascendant Council members have long forgotten their existences as mere mortals. From their wicked sanctum, they oversaw the selection of new ascension candidates.
Elemental ascendant, or Twilight ascendant, are the highest echelon of Twilight’s Hammer cultists who become one with the elements. The Twilight Cultists hope that they will one day become elemental ascendants. But During a dark ritual they are infused with elemental powers, transforming them into monstrosities. The ascension process seems to involve
draining something from other elementals
They’re basically abusing the elements.
Pretty much everyone except adventurers is twisted and corrupted by the ascention ritual
Somehow …
They really need to update the visual though.

I thought it came out in Cata. Perhaps my memory is incorrect but the model is nonetheless a straight Reused Cata asset so my point still stands.
6, 7 or 8 expansions. Whatever. It’s way too many to be using such an outdated model which never made much sense in the first place lore-wise as players are not Twilight cultists.
The model originated in Cata, I believe Bastion of Twilight? I remember seeing it back there, so technically it did exist but we didn’t get to use it till later.
But it really hasn’t been updated since Cata.
Edit: Yeah Ascendant Council - Bastion of Twilight (so many wipes PTSD ). Regardless for it to not have been improved/updated/changed in 10 years is still ridiculous.

Yeah. That’s probably why I got confused.
Kind of makes it even more lazy/worse that when Ascendance was new and introduced in MoP, they were using a previous xpac model so it was already old even back then.

Honestly keep old model as Glyph for those who prefer it (some players might prefer nostalgia), update it with either Updated Elementals or Kurog Grimtotem style or Dathea Ascended Style.
They literally have so many different options to improve it, but somehow think a 10 year old model is still decent…
For MoP it was new and shiny, it was awesome back then but now it’s severely outdated.

Ikr. It would be almost no effort to at least reuse more current and appropriate game assets and good idea keeping the old model as a glyph. Win win win. Blizz has to do next to nothing, players get an “updated” Ascendance form and those who like the current form can still have it. There’s no reason not to do this other than giving zero f… you know.
