I do all classes except mage. Tried them, didn’t click with me. Classic I went to go to Druid and hunter.
Classic Druid had me going this was nothing like retail Druid.
I made the joke if I use a staff so much till you get forms…Druids are just like half baked monks/martial artists lol.
Hunter was cool to use melee weapons for a bit. But I will take retails bow shot in the face over the blade skills.
Leveling in the world definitely has a lot more going for it - you can’t just mow down mobs without a care in the world, but given how long leveling takes, I hesitate to say that’s a good thing.
It’s cool for the first few hours, but becomes amazingly tedious after that, and all the little novelties like having to stop and drink/eat every few pulls start to wear thin.
I still enjoy it, but not in anything more than a short burst every now and then.

its also alot harder to twink, because you actually have to manage your XP (not sure if twinking is even a thing in retail anymore)

No. No, it isn’t hard.
There are things about Vanilla that take more time. You have to be more methodical. The pace of it is slower, and resources are far more finite. Mana matters. Every single spell a caster or healer uses has to be more calculated because you go OOM with a swiftness. Gear matters FAR more than skill in Vanilla because – and this is the honest truth – the encounters require almost zero skill. What the encounters require is that you come prepared with the correct gear…and patience for taking the pulls more slowly and with more consideration. There is no AoE-festing everything down, and the healer cannot sustain you, no matter how good they are, because they don’t have enough mana for that mess.
- Resistance gear is necessary for several of the raids.
- A proper level of gear is necessary for about half of the raid if you want to have good enough heals and tanks that can survive the bosses.
- It’s difficult to assemble and order 40 people in a cooperative, efficient way. So, I guess that part is hard if your raid team isn’t even remotely disciplined or polite to each other.
But the rest is easy. There is nothing “hard” about Classic, and there was nothing “hard” about Vanilla.
Things take more time. Travel takes longer. Grinds take longer. Leveling takes much, MUCH longer.
I loved Vanilla. I enjoy the old world, and Classic gave that back to us. I loved 40-man raid teams. I loved how important the goals you accomplished felt because of the time and effort put in.
But it’s not hard. At all. In any way.

I’d say both are easy, Classic is harder on leveling (unless you are a stupid mage). And retail is harder on raiding/dungeons because they have more mechanics added in.
In the end though raids and the sort are scripted events where the bosses follow the same pattern every single attempt. Unless you are an innovator, the main difficulty in raiding is finding people who will follow the steps correctly.

Normal dungeons in Retail have more mechanics to deal with than Classic raids.

Classic is far easier. The challenge comes from speed runs on push weeks when Darkmoon Fair is up.
First toon you lvl unless its a mage is kinda slow. Second toon you just buy leveling boosts.
Other than that max level is honor grinding, consume/gold farming or raid logging.
their totally different games.
retail has more advanced npc mechanics.
everything other than that is “harder” in classic
- guild organization
-reputation
-obtaining gear
-world pvp / competing for world bosses
-leveling
-twinking
-travel
-grinding raid consumes (cause all best spots have to pvp over)
-just getting into a raid can be very hard. when BWL first opened, it involved 200 person battles outside of black rock mountain.

If you compare classic leveling to BFA leveling then yes its harder, but anything beside the leveling phase? Maybe Classic dungeons can be harder than BFA heroic dungeon in some cases, but that’s pretty much it…
Nothing is easier than what it is now. But its 2 different games, sharing only somewhat related looks, characters and locations.
It’s harder in every way to retail except in raiding and dungeons.

It’s a long, tedious slog, even moreso when you pick specific classes. Been so long since I played it in it’s original hayday I forgot how solo player unfriendly it is [which I’ve been as guilds are still bleh even on Classic either do nothing spam fests that die out or cliquey wannabe hardcore guilds] These days, lack of solo play for me is a hard pass.

I view Classic like a road trip and Retail like a theme park
I feel way more immersed in it when I play, having to eat and drink and worry about resources. The world actually matters.

All those extra GYs are missing in classic, as well.
Vanilla was hard when it came out because everyone sucked, nobody had any idea what to do, there weren’t any people out there to carry or baby you and you had to think for yourself.
Classic is nothing like it. It’s just kids buying boosts from speedrunning zoomies that think they’re good to steamroll old content they have too much gear and world buffs for.

Can you expand on this? Clarification is needed.

literally the only challenging part is the leveling like others have said, and even that isn’t very hard. Is what it is tho I enjoyed playing classic for 6’ish months raided met some cool peeps allat… but after awhile it got really stale for me
It is easier and way simpler. The game was not designed with minmaxing in mind. Onyxia was killed by a naked guild the other day, tanking with hunter pets.

This is true.
This is not at all true. Easier than Mythic raids maybe, especially since people have had 15 years to develop strategies that are the equivalent of the Mythic Skitra cheese strategy that trivializes that boss.
