I know that in TBC they were like stealing it from a Naaru, but as of right now, they pull their Light directly from the Sunwell, right? Not as a result of any sort of religious worship of an entity or vague belief system. They literally pull their magic from the Sunwell, like Mages do? is that completely correct, or only partially? That’s the impression I get from the wiki, that they aren’t terribly religious (and non-religious Paladin archetypes kinda appeal to me).
So, a question or two about BE Paladins, since I can’t damn sleep for some reason.
1)Would a headcanon where the BE Paladin needs to kinda recharge from the Sunwell like a battery from time to time be reasonable? Like a yearly pilgrimage to the Sunwell for replenishment? Or is that a stupid concept?
This is random, but why did BE Pallys get Horses instead of Hawkstriders, when almost every other race got a fancified version of their Racial Mounts?
Is “Blood Knight” an obtainable title?
I’m sorry for the random annoying questions, but I can’t sleep sooooo…let’s talk.
Yes, Blood Elf/Thalassian Elf (yes, there are high elf paladins in the game) do get their Light directly from the Sunwell now. Though the High Elf paladins got into the worship of the Light like the original Paladins did. I LOVE playing Blood Elf paladins for that exact reason. That they’re literally just siphoning their Light magic directly from the Sunwell, as they used to just rip it from the captive N’aaru they had. Now they don’t have to rip it away, and they can just use it without the worship involved. Feels much more like a Spellblade for me, and I’m all about those magic classes! Though Liadrin eventually went full on worship heavy due to her guilt after feeling the pain she was inflicting on the captive creature.
Eh? Not really. Unlike the Night Elves in the Lore when it came to the Well of Eternity, the High Elves haven’t really said how close they need to be to the Sunwell to use its arcane magics, and I’m assuming it’s much the same now that it’s Holy-Arcane instead of just purely Arcane. I’m assuming that they learned techniques to draw from large distances. Which is why when the Sunwell was destroyed/corrupted, the High Elf settlements that were far away from the Sunwell still suffered and became wretches (or died off).
TECHNICALLY they didn’t get horses, they got unicorns… Or I guess bicorns would be more accurate? Which is something the High Elves absolutely did ride, especially noble High Elves in-lore… Though I personally would love an overhaul of Blood Elf paladin mounts (like dwarves got) and we get a bad-butt (censor for forums) paladin-armor hawkstrider mount.
I don’t believe so, but I’ll have to double check.
I really do like how they are so different from almost every other faction of Paladins in the game/lore. Their preferred weapons, method of using Holy Magic, etc. They seem perfect for someone who likes Paladin archtypes but don’t want to have to be a religious zealot.
I wish there were glyphs to change all of the Magic Hammer effects to Spears or Swords.
SAME! I hate it on my paladins when they have a 1-handed sword or something and it’s a hammer that’s flying around. Like, where did the hammer come from?
BC had a very brief phase where at least belf paladins got spears as theme weapons and a heavy focus on ret but that was basically gone before I figured out wth the blood knights were. Had the ret artefact in Legion been a spear I might have bitten the bullet and made my first paladin
Not at all, that’s technically what all Blood elves do to abate the magical addiction. So Paladins going to recharge themselves like a Green Lantern battery isn’t that far fetched.
Goes back to Old WoW. Back in Classic all Paladins got Horses as their mount. So in TBC Blood elves got a recolor.
Not that I’m aware of, you can get a tabard though.
As far as I know, blood elves often take pilgrimages to the Sunwell anyway regardless of background, as it’s critical in all of their lives.
Likely because of the timing. Paladins on Horde hadn’t even been something the player base thought would happen at the time and when blood elf paladins became a thing, they got a red and gold version of the human paladin mount. Is it something they could go back and look at later? Sure. But this is likely just a product of the time.
Its stated that most of them are now faithful to the Light and while their energies do come from the Sunwell they’re not “pulling it” so much. Though its also stated that some of them didn’t stop pulling it like they were. So its either or for ya.
Nah, thats fine. Technically all thalassian elves feel the Sunwell and gain something from it from afar but if you wanted a paladin that for whatever reason makes regular trips to “recharge” theres nothing to stop you.
Cause early on they were just supposed to counter the Alliance Paladins that all also used the same mount for their side.
Its just never been updated.
I’m unaware of any. Though I wish there was.
All elves need magic in some form or another no matter what. Even Night Elves use arcane/nature Moonwells.
The Magical addiction of Thalassian elves is still in full effect. (We’re unsure of the effects on Void Elves.)
Nah it’s still a thing, Nightborne cured it with the Arcan’dor but Blood elves still need the Sunwell otherwise it’s back to siphoning magic from things both living and not like a pack of rats.
i am not sure it ever was. But I miss the blood knight class quest from classic.
I wish that blood elf holy spell effects had some sort of blood tinge to them, as in a slight orangey-red or something, to differentiate from from regular old human light stuff.
I think it was hinted that the Sunwell trascends universal distances. I think someone asked in regards to Alleria, and appearantly she was still affected by Sunwell before its destruction.
The reignition of the Sunwell was also, as you point out, immediately felt by the High Elves in Quel’Lithien, as was written in the Lor’themar Story: In the Shadow of the Sun. Lor’themar and the High Elven priestess at the Lodge, even hinted that the new peculiar magic could be felt by all elves in Quel’thalas now, aka, the Sunwell felt similar but different, due to it now being a mix of Light and Arcane.
High and Blood Elves becoming wretched was not a result of the Sunwell’s corruption or destruction though. Wretched is what happens to High Elves and Blood Elves who fail to control their magic urges, wretched and withered are not the same thing.
Basically: Wretched = absorbing too much arcane magic
Withered = an absence of magic
High Elves and Blood Elves could actually live without magic, the Nightborne could not.
Well, it is highly debatedly whether the Blood Elves could live without magic or not - considering that Quel’thalas which they fought for was besieged by scourge remnant and amani resurgents, and were only saved when Rommath and other magisters returned from Outland and taught the rest how to siphon magic, then they managed to retake and control Eversong Woods.
The Sunwell cleansed our fel corruption, but we have a connection to the Light just like any other faithful race. There are simply too many blood elf paladins for the Sunwell to sustain by itself.
The biggest complication is that while it wasn’t an exclusive source of all sustenance like it was for the shal’dorei who pretty much had no room for food production besides the city’s gardens, the loss was still felt enough that the weakest (especially children) couldn’t survive. So the sunwell was somewhere between moonwells and the nightwell in terms of being a necessity (i.e. between “losing it will kill everyone” and “losing it is an emergency in the long term we can probably fix quickly without mass death.”)
The thing with death happened near-immediately for the youngest, oldest and most ill High/Blood Elves, according to some source book I can no longer remember. It is what drove Kael’thas to believe that his people would die without a Sunwell. It also happened right after the Sunwell’s destruction.
Blood elves did get that special questline back in shadowlands. It rewarded paladins with blood knight armor, and yes, a new polearm. Although the weapon might just be a general weapon, not blood knight specific. Still though, looks cool. Like a modern version of the blood tempered ranseur.
They are like the Green Lanterns. If they don’t charge up while saying an oath they become withered.
"In blackest day, in brightest night, Beware the parasites that stole the light. It’s entirely possible, Lord Garithos was right. We better burn Silvermoon, with Zandalar’s Might!"
You can also pick up the original ranseur off the ground during the quest, too. Was a nice little thing for those who didn’t get the chance to do the old class quests before they were removed.
For me, Druid and Paladin were the two classes that I just could not get into until Zandalari came along. Being a Prelate of Rezan or Raptari is just way cooler to me.
