So... artifact weapons and the new changes

This may seem like a stupid question…

Since we can choose which expansion we’d like to level with once we hit 10, if I choose Legion and get my artifact weapon, will that be scaled to my level? Like, will it be an artifact weapon for a level 10, or will it scale as I level like an heirloom?

No idea but i would assume it would scale

…all the way to 50? If so, It would seem worthless to start at level 10 in any expansion besides Legion…and any other weapon while leveling would seem worthless aside from transmogs. Kind of like an heirloom weapon.

Not a stupid question at all.

That’s a darn good question!

It doesn’t scale. You get the ilevel at whatever is decent for your level at the time. Since artifact powers are disabled anyway you only really need it for the transmog

The relics still exist and all they do now is boost the ilvl of the artifact weapon.

yes you acquire artifact wep at lvl 10 with questing you get relic to put in them to lvl up the weapon ilvl.

most of my testing in the ptr was doing legion after exile reach. some rare are harder and elite but the rest is soloable

I think I got the answer…thanks for the input.

From my testing on the ptr the artifact weapons start at ilvl 20 https://ptr.wowhead.com/item=128402/maw-of-the-damned?bonus=0, but you can put relics in them as you level to make them stronger. You would be better off getting a heirloom weapon that levels with you I think.

Yes, in a way they do scale. The artifact weapon is now scaled down to level 10 when you start the Legion expansion quest line.

It works just like it did during legion where you will get artifact relics that will boost the ilvl of the weapon as you slot them, however the talents and abilities are still pruned and gone from the weapon as you level.

In my experience it was better to just use the heirloom weapon with an enchant as it stays more consistent as you level, but the artifact weapon is a fine substitute if you don’t have an heirloom to use.

You don’t get the talents from the weapon. It’s just another stat stick. So it’ll be no different than your heirlooms. But if you don’t have the artifact appearances, it might be worth it.

What about the necklace from BFA?

I was wondering about artifact quests.

With the leveling being 10 to 50, will we have all the abilities to complete the quests? As an example, I vaguely remember the warlock quests required the use of the demonic circle to cross a river of fel or fire or something.

If we don’t have the ability required, we could end up failing the quest.

Fun note…

I copied my demon hunter to the Beta. She doesn’t have very good gear. Average of ilevel 60 on Beta. However, her Legion Artifact weapon is ilevel 71. Better than the glaives she has from BFA which are ilevel 60.
