As a fellow mage it would be nice to uh… yah know. Be able to slow fall while mounted 
You can. Cast slow fall, mount up, jump off of high place.
I used it to bypass several geographic obstacles prior to unlocking flying.

So…
To sum it up. Op was on mage, didn’t have flying, and ran off a cliff and died because he didn’t pay attention.
Edit: OK. So he could have had flying actually, and was just on a ground only mount. There is a little bit of chance there…

You can cast it while falling to save yourself too. Not to mention ice block or a well timed blink…
Dying to fall damage as a mage should practically never happen.
