Hi everyone and thanks for reading. I know this isn’t technical support, but so far, no one has been interested in helping me anywhere else. Ever since I downloaded the latest Major windows 10 update, 1903 I think, my computer has been super slow, unresponsive, and I cant control certain features, such as brightness.
How do I fix the lag issue? I’m sure its a result from windows 10 update because I wasn’t having this problem yesterday. Also, would it just be easier to revert the update and go back to 1809 or would I be shooting myself in the foot?
-thanks
update: I decided to go back to the previous version of windows 10 and my computer is still slow. When I’m playing wow I still have a red bar (high Ms) even though my network says I have a strong connection.
I’m trying to figure out if windows did something to slow my computer or there is a problem with my wifi card. I use a pci-e wifi card that’s a year old and its wireless because of my house situation. I kept getting knocked off the internet even though my network showed full strength. I would have to manually re-connect to the network. That’s when someone recommend I download the latest version of windows 10. But, then my computer became even slower now. Maybe I should just get a new wifi card? I can’t connect a wire to the router.
Sounds like you’re on a laptop.
Back up your stuff and do a system reset would be the quickest way to resolve this. Not guarantee that it will fix it but at least it’ll rule out OS corruption.
Unless you have a save point to the day before you installed the update, then you can try that before doing a system reset.
If it’s laptop, good idea to hard reset. Backup data and fresh install.
Tech rule
- Did you shut down?
- Have you system reset?
It sucks when you are trying to find why something isn’t working, but my last bad hard drive took me a week to figure out because every issue can take you ten different directions, and it’s just way more time saving to give up and reset.
I have always had problems with WiFi cards. You can try updating drivers but desktop ones have had problems with blue screening and causing other issues. I tend to hard wire, use the systems that connect router to a plug in and transfer that way to another plug in to PC, or a USB wifi.
With Windows 10, it is much more difficult to tweak updates than previous versions so you may just need to wait it out.
If you ever feel like upgrading, I would go to desktop. You can buy a used Dell Optiplex (only get tower, or one that looks like desktop and not DVD player) for a few hundred. They aren’t the most upgradeable machines but if you get one with decent CPU speeds and RAM you just need to trade out Hard disk drive with an SSD and a cheap gfx card like GTX 1650 (that doesn’t need extra power) and have a smooth machine for WoW.
Big problem with laptops is as they get thinner, there is less parts replaceable on then. Lenovo Thinkpads have historically been replaceable, but becoming less so. Problem ends up being all the heat generated with no replaceable parts in a thin setup = shorter lifespan.
A desktop can act like a Tacoma or F150 where it’s a big beast that has plenty of easy tools to fix and run forever.
A lot of used optiplexs come with free copies of windows 10 and sometimes even mouse, keyboard, and monitor.
Also, optiplexs are pretty easy to open. To change hard drive you just need to plug the power and data cable to SSD instead of HDD. You can just Velcro (probably tape) SSD somewhere inside machine. SSD doesn’t have problems with vibrations or overheating HDD does.
But in contrast, I could build a $300-$400 Optiplex and play WoW smooth for a long freaking time whereas my thinkpad 480 that was around twice the price of that and can run wow at lowest setting.
It has a built in gfx card so could run better but the gfx cards in laptop drain battery fast and cause more overheating. So unless you like the moving PC idea from coffee shop to work, desktop every time.
For comfort, price, and sight, I much prefer desktop.
OK thank you everyone for your patience. I actually built my own desktop. I un-installed windows 10 then re-installed it used their recovery options. (I don’t know if that’s the same as a MANUAL un-install.) I’m in the process of reinstalling all my drivers and anti-virus softwares. I think my computer slowed because of all the windows 10 updates because I noticed over the years, my computer would run slower and slower, but this time it really stinks. If it’s still slow i’ll try a clean reboot. And yes, I use pci-e cards.
A clean re-install would be best but do you have a Win10 install? Also depending on your hardware, you might have to install a newer version of Win10. OS installs might fail on newer hardware and older versions of Windows.
If you’re running ICUE 3.19.x STOP and remove it and go out and get 3.20.x , there was a massive bug with 3.19 which caused higher CPU usage and interrupts which really was more noticeable with gaming than other 2D Apps.
I know it’s been awhile, but are you talking about the memory card?
