SL S1 is both enthralling and frustrating

Washed-up boomer thread alert

tl:dr game fun but also not

It’s hard to quantify what I enjoy and don’t enjoy about Shadowlands arena so far, and without getting into the problems with gearing and boosting, I think the best way of putting it is that doing a lot of damage and getting kills feels way better than the last two expansions, but MAN does it feel way harder to counter misplays.

I feel like warriors are the perfect example of this. I genuinely can’t tell the difference between a 1600 Arms warrior and a Gladiator warrior, because despite all the tools they have their damage is very on-rails and it’s nearly impossible to get anything to stick on them if they mess up. Not that I’m advocating for nerfs, I just think that everyone is frustrated with this one class despite them not being the only class/spec that has this luxury.

Look at fire mages. They don’t need damage so they run Triune Ward, and their actual gameplay is very basic - land easy sheeps/RoF with DB, pop combust and go. If you mess up, you have cauterize as a cheat death (other mage specs have to iceblock), you’re probably NF so you have a pod, you have iceblock, and if all else fails you have 3 schools of magic to work with to peel for yourself/your team. The only real counter is another mage or a well timed grounding totem.

Boomkins are the same. Yeah convoke is a meme but they’re near impossible to actually punish for playing poorly. Also you can just get hit for 20k despite kicking convoke instantly since the first spell cast is instant. When they run out of damage they can sit in bear form if getting trained or peel/off heal.

Sub rogues aren’t that great outside of their kill window, but they’re infuriating to play against because blizzard gifted them free restealths. Like, no one wants to play against rogues because it’s so scripted what they’re gonna do: open, do big burst with (insert new crazy combo sub to my channel click the bell), if kill then collect points if not then run away despite bleeding and dots. Don’t need to vanish, don’t need to commit cloak, don’t need to really do anything, just walk away.

The list goes on but you get the picture.

The trend with the “problem” specs boils down to them having way too easy of a time (note: not just because of their damage) because you can’t punish them as easily.

The flipside of this is that I’m having loads of fun playing off meta specs and classes by finding the odd kill window and actually killing people in cc chains. That felt genuinely impossible last expansion so it’s definitely nice. I’d like to see blizzard tone down the ability to blanket mistakes for the problem specs so that you can actually counter misplays without having to be a god-tier gamer.

That’s very relatable. The game swings from decent to frustrating all the time and it’s always the same few overloaded specs in charge of gutting out the fun because it doesn’t even matter much if they mess up.

The RNG burst is also a factor. It is very frustrating to finally get the upper hand over a fotm setup only to suddenly get deleted by something random.

I can’t stand it. The barrier to entry is just really high too. All my PvP friends quit because it’s so bad. Forced to use the LFG tool which is like the worst experience in a video game imaginable.

Weird, all my pvp friends came back and are now the most active since mop. SL has things to improve for sure, but it’s light years better than the dampening meta of the last two expansions.

Yea we’re in the new WoW token meta now where the player with the most amount of tokens gets all the gear.

Ya I don’t know how anyone can defend the state of the game being completely pay to win. So long as you have gold, you can get anything in this game.

Right right. Everyone just buys their rating. Got it.

At least the statement is true that it is possible to P2W <1800 (according toall those ad)

You begin to understand

This weirdest thing I’ve found is it feels good to execute the strategy to create your win condition, but the strategies themselves don’t feel good.

Sub rogue, you’re spot on - I sap, I burst, I blind, I burst some more. If the kill target is still alive, I haul, reset, and try to make it happen again.

Winning feels good of course, but the manner in which I win isn’t all that rewarding.

The only really rewarding games are the ones where something goes off script and its a freestyle to see who knows how to best utilize their toolkit against the enemy.

The guaranteed restealths are one of the most frustrating things for me.

They almost need them to be competitive though because they can’t go toe to toe with any melee without cooldowns or they flop, but it creates so many win conditions when you can’t find them with the sight eye, or they sap you from 20 yards out when you get near them on a pillar anyways.

If condemn charge, restealth conduit, triune ward, convoke were all changed this season would be lit.

If only I had listened to all those low level alts!

balance druids as an entire class - not just convoke. spam bearform tank with thorns and regen is goofy… fire mage as an entire class… hpal, divine toll…

More carries than actual players playing in lower MMR brackets, constant heavy-handed nerfs that make entire classes unviable or gimmick niches…

Gear ilvl disparity between introductory (158) to fully upgraded (197) versus introductory (200) to fully upgraded (220+)

I’ll grant you Trirune Ward giving mages 25k in shields every 20s with no cost is absurd, but what you listed was far from SL’s problems.

In your opinion*

I actually agree with this, I feel like this season was so close to being decent.

Also, make it easier for people to gear alts. I play one character, I feel for people that want to play multiple characters, looks just god awful.
