I’m fairly new and am curios whether it is better to have all your toons on a single realm or do most people have alts on multiple realms?
At the moment, I have multiple realms because I wanted two Evokers, one of each spec.
What are the advantages or disadvantages to multiple realms?
my active toons are on the Alexstraza-Terokkar connected realms, they benefit from being able to mail most stuff between them
When mailing contriband to your other toons it is best to be on the same realm.
Typically its better to be on single realms for simplest of reasons. Everything is there, when you want to mail something, it can only be done on the same realm you are on, yourself or friends, or w/e. When it comes to be on multiple realms…well, not really much of a advantage IMO other than when the one realm you were on suddenly loses population and isn’t filling back up, you can fall back onto the other you were also on.
So IMO, stick to one realm and stay there if you can. Especially if you have gone so far in terms of achievements, gear, vanity items, etc. You can’t transfer gear or gold out of realms, so you have to transfer your character by service.
If you plan on RPing, do find out if the realms are Faction focused because its often populated by Horde or Alliance, neither by both.
I have all my alliance characters on 1 server, all my horde on a different one, and both servers are linked to each other anyway lol
