Is the only thing that makes this weaker the GCD? If my rotation is mostly casted spells that take longer than the GCD, is my DPS even being nerfed?
Technically, yes.
The single button rotates abilities on a longer GCD than the normal rotation, generally around 20% to 30% slower depending on the class and spec. And this does affect instant cast abilities more than hard casts.
The most recent analysis I can find is here, from August, and it lays out, for each class and spec, where the losses are in terms of abilities used.
