Since when is this offensive?

As it is in the title (i’ll try to describe it without getting silenced or banned) since when is the G in LGBT an offensive word? This is the second time i get reported (?) for using even a censored version… Especially during pride month. Is this some kind of sick joke?

Depends entirely on the context you’re using it mate. And on who you’re saying it in front of. Some folks are very open about joking about their sexuality, for example. Others might not be. You need to assume the latter when speaking in public places with people you don’t know well.

That would be a fair point if that was the case. :frowning:

EDIT: I dont know if you pulled a sneaky on me and edit your post but here is my follow up response: Yeah i see where you are coming from. I never thought about that since the bunch i usually play with are quite open about these things and liberal thinking people. I got too comfortable i think.

Also there it is again. Got flagged. Ridiculous

Yep, context is key. If people take it as an insult, then it’s an insult.

If it’s just a chat warning, then that’s not on your record and isn’t sent to the GMs. It’s just a warning.

Edit to add:

To be fair, talking about sanctions on the forums is actually against the CoC.

But if you ever do have questions about what may or may not be allowed, you can always ask in the CS forums.

It’s 2023. If you’re still using “Gay” to describe “Stupid or messed-up”

I feel for you. (Not really)

Grow up. It’s not 2006 anymore.

Yeah, edited to add more and some formatting and junk. Didn’t change anything that contradicted the original post, I don’t think.

That’s a good call. Thank you

If you got in trouble, I think it’s probably because there’s a ban quota that Blizz is trying to hit—or maybe they’re going back to their mid-2000s era policy of banning people for being out in-game idk

i always thought the G word was a good thing it means happy .
but it also has another meaning and people tend to see something and report instead ofreading what it actually is.

It’s not a conspiracy theory; there’s precedent for this. From Ars Technica:

Blizzard bans recruiting for gay guild

Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, one of the most popular online games, conjures …

NATE ANDERSON - 2/7/2006, 1:33 PM

If all publicity is good publicity, then Blizzard has just stumbled onto a winning strategy. In Newsweekly first broke the story of Sara Andrews, a World of Warcraft gamer who set out to start a guild friendly to GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered) players and began recruiting within the game world. She was warned by a Blizzard gamemaster that this violated the company’s policy on harassment. Andrews, who at first thought there had been some miscommunication, exchanged a few e-mails with various Blizzard staff members and soon learned that they were quite serious about preventing her from in-game recruiting for her new guild, Oz, whose credo “is one of peace and unity without judgments or intolerance of others, whatever they may be.” Blizzard went so far as to threaten Andrews with banishment from the game if she continued.

And then later from the BBC:

Gay rights win in Warcraft world
By Mark Ward
Technology correspondent, BBC News website

The maker of the hugely popular online game, World of Warcraft, has changed its policy on gay teams following an outcry from many players.

Blizzard was accused of being heavy-handed by threatening to expel a player for advertising a gay-friendly team or guild.

Blizzard has officially apologised to the guild recruiter, saying the warning should never have been issued.

Context is everything. Id like to know how you used this word.

Depends on the context in which it was used. Some people go ape poo insane if you call something it when you mean you don’t like it.

Reminds me of the old cringe commercials for that very subject, one for example:

I have never been censored for using the word ‘gay’ to describe myself. On forums or in game. I believe this is a context issue.

Yes it is. There’s no quota. There’s a CoC to follow.

“Now we don our gay apparel”

So Christmas carols are right out now, yes?

Based on the context, no reasonable person should be offended by that song lyric. But to be fair, I’m sure there are plenty of unreasonable people that would, regardless of the context.

If people use it as an insult, then people will take it as an insult.
