I think it’s reasonable to want to wear certain helmets without having all your hair cut off. Picture somebody with long hair wearing a knit hat. The hair is just flowing out from under the hat. It would be cool to see your characters hair while wearing helms where it would make sense.
Is that possible in WoW? I don’t know how it would work on the technical side. What do you guys think? Do you think more people would hide helm less if this were to be implemented? Is it even possible?
Transmog has improved but clipping (in my opinion) just keeps getting worse. I don’t know that they will put the effort forth to figure it out, since it isn’t game breaking.
Maybe only Sylvanas is meant to have a hairstyle and headgear.
It’s not impossible of course, but the amount of work it would take is probably considerably more than we would ever think. Even games like FF that work around showing hairstyles still have clipping issues.
Some things are unexpectedly difficult to do in game, or doing them right requires a performance sacrifice elsewhere. Cloak physics and hair physics come to mind as popular examples.
Most of the hair in WoW is static but they’d still have to think about how each helmet worked with/without hair clipping, unless they just made it a toggle for players to decide.
Toggles are probably even a controversial ask because then you get developers who take pride in their work having to accept that someone is going to let their mohawk clip right through their top-hat and that’s going to make the thing those developers work so hard on look ugly (eg, the Apple excuse for not letting people choose where to place icons on their iOS desktops for 10 years, or still limiting acceptable watch face backgrounds).
You would have to have dynamic hair and collision detection. Wieght maps that way hair flows out of the helms than clip through. They need a Pixar department just to make the hair look and move naturally.
If they just went easy and had it show through the helm it would swallow most appearances like dwarf beards do with some head gear.
FFXIV adjusts hair to show where appropriate with hats/hoods/etc. TERA used the solution of creating a “normal” version of all hairstyles and an “updo” version of hairstyles (this was also used for any shirts with high collars that might otherwise clip with longer hair).
updoot based on title alone
please
i usually have long hair on all of my toons but a helmet magically making it all disappear makes me not want to wear most of them
also add a cosmetic slot for eyewear, put it on their helmet if they’re wearing one
This is why unless I’m in a transmog that I love without hair (certain hoods) or something that floats above your head/is more like a headband, my helm is usually hidden. Pigtails don’t make for the best helm hair decision, anyway.
Who cares about clipping. Just give us a checkbox to decide for ourselves if it looks good with our hairstyles. if not, I’ll disable it. If its minor clipping or it doesn’t clip I’ll keep it. If it looks like trash I’ll obviously not use it. Let me decide my own damn character look tyvm.
If you import these models into like the model viewer and force the helm and hair geosets to stay active together a majority of the time it looks fine. So it’s literally a feature that’s being held back for no good reason. I mean yeah the Marge Simpsons forsaken hair might not work with 99% of the helms but guess what… most players don’t use that hairstyle anyways!
Oh and to add to this? I’d go the extra mile and enable further customization like we got with the shoulders. The ability to use two helms at once. So I can wear like a hood and some glasses at the same time. Or a hood and mask. Or a collar and hat. Maybe some engineering goggles and a floating halo. I don’t care, should let me just decide what I think works best together.
Also all glasses and goggles should come with a second xmog unlock that places the model on top of our foreheads like a headband.
