Show Only Nameplates in Combat?

I want to show nameplates ONLY in combat, but it seems to either be entirely ON or OFF.

In Options >> Names, I UNSELECT “Always Show Nameplates”. It says it’s supposed to show nameplates in combat, but I don’t see the enemy nameplate in combat at all unless ALL nameplates are ON. If I hit V to show Enemy Nameplates, it just turns on ALL enemy nameplates and there are nameplates everywhere. Is there a way to show only the enemy’s nameplate that you’re fighting? I feel like this should be easy to do, and I just can’t figure it out.

i dont know about base interface but i use the addon plater and it only shows enemies nameplates when im in instances/wpvp

could look into that if it helps, has a lot of options for customizing how you see the nameplates

I’ve determined what it’s showing are the nameplates of QUEST NPCs. So the option SORT OF works. All other nameplates are off, but all these quest NPCs are ON. I feel like that should be another option to turn quest NPC nameplates OFF (unless in combat).
