Show me what you've got!

Hi all,

I’m still fairly new in regards to character creation and storytelling and wanted to look for some inspiration, so I figured I would put it to you here on the forums. For whomever is willing, tell me about your characters; their lives, stories and personality traits.

Thanks in advance.

Maffe was my first RP character and I made her on a whim. Ended up giving her more flaws than positive attributes, which makes her a very finicky character to RP, especially because people are not usually drawn to her melancholia and gray loyalties. She was actually supposed to be a cautionary short story, but the opportunity to continue her story arose… and now I’m squirming trying to keep her real. Don’t make a character like mine if you don’t like a challenge

Fair and gentle, Meredith Merritt was a promising student of the Light, the perfect Stormwind maiden. Her life was perfect: loving parents, comfortable life, many admirers, maybe a broken heart once. When the Light seemed too quaint for her she decided to dabble in the Shadow too. In her curiosity she found a professor about 30 years her senior. He seduced her and she followed blindly.

When she finished her Holy Studies another professor invited her to come to Northrend on a mission to help the soldiers fighting the influence of the Lich King. In that trip she betrayed and killed the holy mentor, joining the Cult of the Damned with the Shadow specialist, who was in reality a necromancer.

He was studying the many possible ways one could bind souls together to create powerful beings, and Meredith was a perfect subject: her bloodline had a propensity for giving birth to twins, both identical and fraternal. Her strong spirit would make her more likely to withstand the torment of being bound in such an unholy manner, and he hoped the Light she so skillfully manipulated would facilitate the process as well. Unfortunately, in the betrayal of the Holy Light professor Meredith was cursed and cut off from her divine powers.

In the Cult of the Damned she learned how to manipulate the Shadow, but it proved far trickier than the Light, as it was more about guile and persuasion than devotion. While studying under the cultists and necromancers she conceived twins. Her now husband was summoned by the Lich King to become the lead necromancer in Acherus, thus ascending to undeath. Shortly thereafter he came for Meredith as well. They went through with the attempted amalgamation of mother and children… and were successful. She was raised and baptised Maffe, and the Lich King’s brand was put on her, as she was going to be presented to him as the first of many possible enhanced soldiers. As an amalgamation she benefited from enhanced death knight powers, including greater stores of runic powers and the ability to control all 3 elements of Scourge magic at the same time (blood, frost, plague).

However, before she could be presented to the King her husband fell in the battle for Light’s Hope Chapel. With the subsequent change of allegiance by the Ebon Blade she thought it better to remain silent about the amalgamation. With his “death” she was her own person again, and regretted what she had done. The twins within her wanted to follow the Lich King, but she just wants a way out of this situation.

The only way to balance the souls again is to lull them with her memories. Think of how a mother tells stories to her children to help them sleep… because they are all together, the memories of her childhood trick the twins into thinking they are their own, thus making them more compliant to her as she works quietly as an enchantress in Acherus.

It has been, however, almost ten years since all that happened, and they have grown to understand how that works. They are eroding at her defenses, attempting to override her will. She can’t unleash her full power because if she does, they will awaken and take over, then all hell breaks loose in Acherus. For the greater good, she resigns to mediocrity.

In my realm we’re running a little bit of a different storyline, one in which the new Lich King, by means of the artifacts provided to fight the Legion, manages to sneak his mark onto some death knights and the Deathlord. She notices the loss of free will and rebels against it, breaking off from the Ebon Blade.

Maffe joins the rebellion by accident; she was simply following the Deathlord… but when she notices it’s too late and she’s already in too deep. Besides, the kindness and humanity she experiences from the rebels are much better than the dreariness of Acherus.

I find her difficult to RP because as a death knight there are few who are willing to be around her. She is Scourge, after all. Too much was done to her and too much limits her decisions. She’s reluctant to share much of her past, so I have had to progress her backstory through alts and a mind-probing mage. I can’t even do much when we raid or fight mobs, because she’s rather weak as an undead caster; most of her energy goes into keeping the other two souls quiet. Thank goodness I had some RP veterans help me because ohmigosh did I screw that character up!

I find that if I had just remained simple things would have been a lot easier. If she weren’t weak she could go out on her own adventures. If she weren’t so blasphemous it would be easier for others to accept her. If she weren’t so gloomy more people would interact with her. I am just fortunate to have found people who can help me in her development
