I remember that in vanilla experience gain was displayed as a message in the chat window. How can I configure the classic UI to do the same?
There is an option in chat tab settings to show exp gains, but it is just a hover text when you kill a mob. Visible for less that 1 second.

Right click the tab of a chat pane → Settings → Other →

the way Poco told you is correct, will show in chat window, atleast it does in mine. You may have to create a new window for it maybe IDK. can show reputation/money loot/item loot/ tradeskill level ups etc etc
