Since the game takes place on Azeroth and not irl, shouldn’t the “earth” spirits be called Azeroth spirits since Earth irl is the name of our planet and thus the namesake of dirt and rocks. By that logic, everything called “earth” should be renamed Azeroth. Like the “Earth” mother should be called the Azeroth Mother.
Not really. The term “earth” is used to refer to the ground, soil, component rocks, etc. In fact, the primary usage until its adoption as the planetary name was for this purpose!
Elementals of Holy Terra!
Reminds me of the end of the Caverns of Time Strath dungeon, when Arthas declares he’ll chase Mal’ganas “to the ends of the Earth, you hear me? THE ENDS OF THE EARTH!”
Of course, he was well on the way to crazy town by that point, so maybe that justifies it?
We could call them prime enities since they were the first to develop here ,or maybe they came from else where to Azeroth.
The ends of the earth? I think he should say Azeroth or the world.
We don’t really need to have a more formal name for our planet because we haven’t yet identified other populated worlds for context.
If there were only one country that we knew of we wouldn’t really need a formal name until we discovered other countries.
You know what is gonna be weird? If we terraform and colonize Mars and people start saying “Im a simple man, im a farmer and i tend to the mars, and the the mars provides for me and my family.”
I think it’s just semantics. Sort of like how humans in real life could also be called Terrans.
Earth can be soil / ground no matter where it is.
they don’t call it earth. they call it a word in their language, which is translated (like everything else) into our language by your game client!
If you want to get REALLY technical, start calling Earth “Sol 3”. Enjoy the weird looks of your fellow Solarians.
Earths name is scientifically Earth. Terra is a Latin for “earth” and was used commonly by the science community when latin was standard between the scientific disciplines and is common in sci-fiction; however Terra is not the planets actual name. Sol 3 is just a descriptor meaning its the 3rd planetary body from the sun (Sol in latin).
This is actually not true.
Earth comes from Erda, the Anglo-Saxxon word for soil. The planet was not always called “earth” it was called Terra in Latin. Britain/England evolved to middle English and turned Erda/e to Earth and because it became the dominant language in many parts of the world, the name of the planet went from Terra, to Earth.
That is also why soil is still called Earth…in English speaking languages. It is NOT in most other languages but universally, the words for the planet and the soil/ground are the same word…so, the OP was correct.
That line of dialogue was written in Warcraft 3, and it should be duly noted that, at that time, Azeroth was the name of the region now known as the Eastern Kingdoms, aka the general Stormwind Area.
Now, I don’t think anyone ever claimed Warcraft took place on Earth, but given that the planet in general didnt even really have a name at that point, the whole ends of the earth dialogue is very forgiveable.
Could you also call it Gamma Sol?
I don’t know the naming convention of the IAU
To the Op question: could also be land elementals. Or stone elementals.
I wonder how this gets translated in other languages on the WoW client?
To be fair, when Warcraft 3 as written, Azeroth was still just The Kingdom of Azeroth, aka The Kingdom of Stormwind today.
