For new expansions do you think they should stop the same copy pasta method of quest after quest and gain 10 levels then you can do End game stuff, and instead completely change how you go through the new zones. Would love to hear some ideas. I think leveling is outdated and would be nice to get rid of the traditional fashion of how it works.
Leveling is a core part of RPGs, it’s not going anywhere. It’s removal would also mess up the way we progress our characters every x-pack…
So no, WoW should definitely not get rid of leveling.
In cata, I love leveling and it’s the whole point of the game for me.
In retail, I actually hate it. It feels like I’m not even playing the game yet, the story is everywhere, the scaling is horrendous (level arcane mage from 10 to 50 to really see what I mean), the mobs scale with you so it actually gets harder to kill the same mob as you level up so leveling feels wrong. It’s also extremely inefficient to actually level because there’s always some cheat like powerleveling in 2 hours or remix mailbox cheating. Inefficiency is fine if it’s fun but that’s not leveling rn.
I don’t care if you delete leveling in retail, I wouldn’t miss it and that surprises me to say.
Ideally they should fix leveling. It’s in a really bad state right now because they’ve mostly ignored it for so long.
Failing that I imagine it’d not be the most popular opinion around here, but it could be removed and progression handled in a different way. I also know this is irrelevant, because they wont get rid of leveling so long as level boosts sell.
Should WoW get rid of leveling?
That’s like saying baseball should get rid of the batting order and running around the bases. Just have the top hitters and top pitchers go at it all the time.
It wouldn’t be the same game.
How do you suggest we unlock new character abilities, talents, etc. without leveling?
Building a character is a core part of RPGs. We can’t remove it.
You can hide it with other progression systems. Maybe you fill a bar by completing activities or collecting Azerite/Anima, and that awards you 1 talent point every time you fill the bar… See what I mean?
If your tracking character progression to award progress…then you’ve just reinvented the basic RPG leveling system and make it harder for everyone to understand. So, you might as well just use leveling.
No.
i wish we had the option to black out the maps and shut off the quest tracking that tells you exactly where to go , I prefer the old school way with just a couple clues to send you in the right direction, that is when I enjoyed questing, and I never googled my way through it either.
Maybe?
I can see an argument to be made that you should start ten levels under the current cap. Taking it out all together would be a bit to daunting I think.
Players kind of need to feel a reset between expansions.
No.
But there should be a 1-max recap quest line of all the major story beats.
No, they should not. One of the things I enjoy the most is leveling characters.
If they ever did get rid of leveling. I would cancel my account, uninstall for the
first time ever, and never play again.
My thoughts are if someone does not like leveling. They shouldnt be playing
RPGs (well most RPGs at least).
I know there are a few out there, but I honestly can’t think of an RPG that doesn’t have some sort of leveling system off the top of my head.
Absolutely the heck not. Leveling is fun and lets you start to get used to new abilities and changes in the expansion.
I do think they should keep doing these remix events to level new toons though, this is way more fun than chromie time.
Not saying I’m for or against it, but after playing Remix I could see it working similarly:
- Power and Progression are handled through getting better gear ilvls and growing toon stats.
- Unlocking new abilities is handled via discovery similar to Remix tinkers but you learn them rather than equip them. There could be a vendor and currency for people who prefer instance content over world content.
- The difference between xpacs is a matter of continuing the power progression and some catch-up options for return/new players.
If it isn’t leveling its a skill system.
No.
A quick Google search lists a few, but since RPGs need progression one way or another I imagine a lot of people would insist it’s just “levels with extra steps”.
For WoW one of the easiest would probably be to just tie it into the main questlines like how the DK opening area used to give you talent points as quest rewards(and might again, I haven’t made a DK in Dragonflight).
Of course it comes with a whole host of its’ own issues, so the ideal situation is still Blizzard just fixing leveling.
I feel any proposal to remove levels is dead on arrival unless it includes an explanation of how legacy content will be opened up for people who currently wait to outlevel it.
While I agree with this statement in general, it’s a fair question in WoW’s case due to it’s extremely heavy focus on endgame and often dismissive approach to leveling.
Which, in turn raises another question.
Is WoW really an RPG anymore?
Dude forgot this is supposed to be an mmorpg
