Should the repair system be done away with?

As a gameplay mechanic, repair hasnt been a thing people worried about for 10 years now.

Oh youve wiped 10 times on a boss? Well at least 5+ people can drop a anvil or mount that lets you instantly repair. Needing to repair has virtually zero consequences.

At this point, its only purpose is as a gold sink. Get rid of it, and give us meaningful things to spend gold on. Hell, you can even nerf gold acquisition rates to compensate.

But how will all those blacksmiths feed their families if we no longer have to pay for repair services? There will be roaming homeless children pick pockets everywhere.

Repair isn’t there as a gold sink, it’s there as a death penalty. And it’s a pretty tame one given that a lot of games have you lose XP or items.

Maybe in the early 2000’s that was the case, but no popular modern game uses such a mechanic.

Lots of modern games that are popular use such a mechanic. The whole Dark Souls franchise is centered around dying and getting your stuff back.

And WoW’s putting a similar mechanic in the Maw…for better or worse.

Children pickpockets sounds like a far more interesting gold sink than repair bills.

I like slipping the blacksmith a few gold to repair my gear more than having a gang of homeless urchins putting their greasy hands in my pockets and taking my gold. If Blizzard allowed a mini-game where you could chase them down and slap them in the back of the head when you caught them I would be all for it however.

Repairs are really important to prevent gold inflation. I think this game needs more gold sinks, not less, so why get rid of one of the most universal ones?

We already have gold inflation. Or did you not see the prices of mounts this expansion?

Repair has been one of the old holdovers of bad gameplay that’s been maintained, and I really don’t know why.

cough minecraft hardcore mode deletes your save if you die cough
Dark Souls also has some pretty gnarly death penalties.

I helps control inflation by removing gold out of the economy. It may seem small but when you have raid groups spending 500-2000g+ a night on repairs it adds up. It is the same reason there is an AH cut, not goblins swimming in gold as we like to imagine.

If you want an example go to a server where there are very few raiding guilds. Things are insanely expensive.

They should make gold harder To obtain rather imo. It’s far to easy to just do some world quests and boom here’s 2k gold

I think it’s fine staying in. It’s one of those flavor RPG elements and a gradual side effect to combat and dying too much. The price may not be much to gold levels today, but it’s still a small gold sink that adds up over time. Which is the other purpose.

It doesn’t have to be a major one. It’d feel pretty bad having to pay 1-2k gold or more every time.

The reason Blizzard makes those mounts cost a lot of gold is actually to lower inflation. It takes gold out of the player economy.

Khrude think repairing armor make blacksmith HUGE MONEY, so Khrude became blacksmith. Then Khrude find out that money disappear into void. But THEN Khrude think, wait, maybe gold used to repair armor! Khrude armor made with gold now!

Khrude so money.

A death penalty, like corpse running and res timers. Both things a lot of other MMO’s don’t have.
