It’s been over 2 years since the Mage Tower and it’s respective rewards and content have been removed.
I’ve spoken to people who
- Never completed the mage tower
- Obtained all 36 appearances
- Only obtained a few of them
- Obtained when it first came out in 7.2
- Swapped main classes from the toon with their mage tower items.
I brought up the idea, “If Blizzard were to introduce the Mage Tower but only the base appearance and not the ability to unlock all the colorations, how would you feel about it? Especially for Legion Timewalking.”
How would timewalking go about it without it being a joke?
Perhaps disabling Covenants, Soulbinds and Conduits, scaling it to your Item Level can help with the balancing of it. Yes, classes don’t play like they use to. But by the end of Legion, the Mage Tower was a joke if you just had a little a bit of gear.
Scaling it by Item Level or a base Item Level like how the MoP Challenge mode and WoD Challenge modes did it, can keep the challenge.
When you really break it down, the challenges from the mage tower were not each built specifically every spec, lots of the challenges were reused for some specs.
*Example, the Thwarting the Twins (Raest Magespear) was a challenge for how well you could cast while moving. *
How did my talks with players go?
- Players who never obtained it.
Most of them seemed to like the idea to just get the opportunity to try it even if they don’t get a reward. They would just like to see what it was like.
-Players who obtained all 36
From the 3 people i asked, if i brought up the idea of all the colors, they were againist it 100%. But if it was only the base appearances, they were a lot more on board with the idea of it returning just so other people can have a chance of experiencing it.
-Players who only obtained a few of them
They did not mind the idea of only the base appearance returning. As long as the other colors did not return.
-Players who obtained it when it first came out
Out of the ones i asked. They really liked the challenge and felt like they truely earnt it but once it became a joke in 7.3, they felt like it was “A thing to do before the end of legion” Not a challenge like it was meant to be.
-And finally, The ones who swapped classes
The ones i asked would love to get their appearances for their mains now. Many, including myself, regret not getting it for the class they main now. But out of the ones i asked, they would like to see it return.
The Mage Tower was not like MoP or WoD Challenge modes. Out of everyone i asked. They all understood the challenge behind those appearances.
The Mage Tower was a unique piece of content.
If the Mage Tower does return for Legion Timewalking.
It should ONLY be the base appearance or a new recolor. Readding the full thing would be an insult to the ones who earnt it then as the colors were earnt by directly doing legion content (Other than the RBG appearance) It should not allow Convents, Soulbinds, Azerite, Essences or Anything of the like, in the Mage Tower as it makes it a joke once again which is what we don’t want.
Blizzard could even implement an item named like “Empowered Shard of the Legion” That is BOA (Bind on Account) to Sacifice one of your other toons Mage Tower Appearances to get the full thing by doing a harder version of the challenge on the new toon you want the appearance for.
Tldr: Mage tower should return but only the base appearances and scaled without any borrowed power.
