If you did the dark iron questline you know about the attempt to resurrect Ragnaros. For the longest time we always thought once an elemental dies in the elemental planes it a “final death”. Apparently this has now been retconned, at least to the point where an elemental can be resurrected.
There is a good chance Smolderon(the current firelord) will die and his power will be used to bring back Ragnaros, the question is should he be brought back? Do we really want a firelands redux(possibly with a Ragnaros that is mostly gonna have some old god influence?). Ragnaros was always loyal to the Old Gods.

Maybe we’ll fight just his lower half this time?

No, i am tired of reviving old characters just to kill them start building new or let the game die.
blizzard is clearly running out of villains, poor gorak tul was defeated 3 times in the same patch.

His replacement was so absurdly lame and forgettable that I almost hope he does.
Ordos should have been the new Firelord.

Personally, even if we dont kill Ragnaros again, I still want High justice Grimstone dead. I still have a bone to pick with him from when I started playing WoW in BC.
If only to squash Smolderon with Sulfuras in an anti-climactic and underwhelming fashion. So we can replace him with the not-dead and fairly iconic Baron Geddon, who SHOULD have been made the new Firelord in the first place instead of a needless OC reskin with a stupid name.

As far as I am aware, nothing has been retconned. I think those Dark Irons just didn’t know he’s permanently dead.
Raggy was killed in the Firelands so he’s perma-dead.
I can see the next Expac now. “World of Warcraft, the Return of Ragnaros”
“Now we’re on his terms, and it’s never too soon”
NO!

Stop bringing back old characters. Start inventing new ones for Christs sake. Stop encouraging this creatively bankrupt process to fuel someone’s revisionist nostalgia.

Feels like Blizz would be breaking their own rules on the whole “Kill x on their own plane to get rid off for good”. Raggy isn’t a bad character, but he met a fitting end. No more, no less.
If we got an AU Ragnaros however…
Ragnaros is a memorable character, plus Blizzard is running out of idea for threats in the game so it possible for them to do it but bring him back in another incarnation.
Personally, I’d rather him stay dead but with his return would put the need of focus on the Fire Elementals which make Smolderon better Firelord or another fire elemental rising up to take up the title of Firelord.
They did make a new character. He was mentioned earlier in the thread and yet still I forget his name. No one likes him.
This is the reason we are getting classic. To restart WoW. I hope they wipe everything clean. They are altering Wc3, that means they can alter Classic.
Smolderon. I think he’s alright. Has a cool model, at least.
As a good guy sure ill take him
Alright? Cool model? He’s just a lame re-skin of Baleroc and isn’t even related to him. I mean, a sucessor to the first and most iconic raid boss in all of WoW should be epic and huge. But he’s not, he has absolutely nothing going for him, he’s just some random elemental that came outta nowhere. If he was at least related to Baleroc, he could have been somewhat interesting.
I know not every character has to be related to another really big figure to be cool, but this is the exception. It’s like how when Daniel from the OG Karate kid trilogy was replace by Julia in “The Next Karate kid”. She literally came right out of nowhere with no connection to the original story and the only thing she had going for her was that she was portrayed by Hillary Swank. Except unlike her, he has literally zero things going for him. No previous backstory, no notable feats under his belt, no mentions of who he is, he’s literally just a random dude who we promote to being the ruler of all fire elementals on azeroth.
No. Blizzard has serious problems with just reviving dead villains over and over again instead of making new ones. See how many times we’ve fought the Scarlet Crusade, for example. And all it serves to do is make the villains pathetic that they keep losing again and again.
Blizzard refuses to make new characters, they keep just banking on nostalgia and reusing the same people over and over.
The solution to peoples’ problems with Smolderon isn’t to kill him off, it’s to actually develop him. Give him a personality and goals, not smash him with a hammer in favor of more nostalgiabait.

and atleast give him a new unique model
How is Baron Geddon Nostalgia bait? We didn’t kill him off, we banished him back to the Firelands but we never saw him in the raid. He’s simply a character with more story to tell, in my eyes.
Look, there’s necessary new characters and the then there are needless new characters. Characters like Garrosh and Anduin are prime examples of necessary new characters because they push the narrative forward and were/are a huge force in the story. Characters like Yrel and Talanji are examples of unnecessary new characters, because while they can move the plot forward there were already characters that could do the same narrative job as them.(Maraad and Rastakhan)
Smolderon just so happens to fall in the unnecessary. Not only are there a whole slew of Fire elementals that could satisfyingly fill the same role as him, but because they can also perform the role way better than him. I mean, where’s Baron Geddon? Where’s Garr? Where are some of the OG Fire elementals? It’s not simply for the sake of nostalgia, it’s the fact that we don’t need yet another character in a market that already has plenty of existing characters to choose from.
A market that could use a OC rn would be the Forsaken, which they have in fact, have done with good ol’ Zelling who fills a completely new role as a sympathetic forsaken who made the ultimate sacrifice for his family.
