Should I try retail?

I’m sure there have been a thousand of posts similar to this over the years - but each case is slightly different - here’s mine.

I played original wow from 2004 through a small portion of Wrath - I never raided Wrath, except maybe a pug or two. Then I took a long, long break until late 2023 when I came back to era and HC. I still enjoy classic as well as the “challenge” of HC but Retail has me slightly curious and I’ve considered trying it out.

That being said - it seems intimidating for someone who is approaching 50 and isn’t really even sure where to begin. Is it too late for me? I get the impression that large portions of the community are not patient with new players, which is what I would essentially be.

I’d love to get some genuine feedback and advice!

TL:DR - Middle aged Classic Andy curious about Retail - Should he give it a try?

Can’t hurt to try. If you’re subbed then you already have access to everything through Dragonflight.

Oh right, I forgot you still have to buy old expansions lol

$15 gets you everything up to and including Dragonflight and level 70 cap.

Go for it.

Huh? Did you mean to say you don’t have to? Because you don’t.

I would definitely give it a shot. If you’re paying a sub then you’re already paying for everything up through DF (which is the worst xpac, btw… but some of the earlier ones are still loads of fun) so go for it!

Yes it’s pretty fun.

Try something easy like Ret paladin or BM Hunter first.

Well, you have to buy Dragonflight. I was thinking just having a sub gets you everything up to TWW.

Or am I crazy and I was right all along? I’ve bought every expansion on release so I have no memory of how it works lol

I’m 48, been playing on & off since TBC. I find retail way more fun than classic. Yeah there can be a lot to do, but you don’t have to do everything in the game.

You do not, A sub gets you DF and 70 cap now, it’s included in the sub price.

"Get access to World of Warcraft®, now including Dragonflight, WoW® Classic: 20th Anniversary Edition, Cataclysm Classic™, and more!

Both?

Retail is generally way more fast paced, so be prepared for that if you try it. Even leveling content, Timewalking, normal and heroic dungeons, all of it just moves faster.

Okay so I just confused myself with your $15 comment.

I was assuming since she plays Classic that she’s already subbed.

It’s almost 5, I just wanna go home lol

So long as you understand its a different game, then absolutely.

Retail is great. It can be as casual or as difficult as you want it to be.

I’d at least give it a try. If you like it then you can pick up TWW.

You’ll only know if you try, fair warning, depending on who you hang with it can seem a little emptier/colder than most classic realms.

This was my first thought, and the correct answer.

I’m 61, and I enjoy retail. It’s very different in some ways, but very much the same in others. I’ve been playing for years, so I know classic as well. Both are fun in their own ways. Core gameplay continues to be open world questlines leading into various instances (dungeons, raids, delves…).

Retail has better graphics, newer art, and more quality of life features. The stories and side quests and hidden easter eggs are all still there, but sometimes get missed amidst the bigger splashier endgame content. It is what you make of it.

I’m blessed to be in a guild that’s been continuously active since the first month of vanilla. WoW has changed over the years, but we’re still here and enjoying it together. Alt raid starts in about an hour!

It’s never too late my friend. Remember that.

I’d say Retail is fun to go through at least once.

Once you hit the current content and the treadmill begins feel free to jump off.

There is years of solo content available within Retail if you were interested in collecting.
If you are looking to fill a void. Kill upwards of immense amounts of time. Retail can satisfy.

As others have mentioned, finding your place in the game is imperative. Being around like minded players, clean or dirty talk, young or old, emotionally mature.
Whatever you need to enjoy yourself can take time to find.

Its easy to lose sight of the enjoyment from the game when you have an incredibly vocal 5% of the population that are pure vitriol.
If you learn to never engage with them when they spam you. You will be happy.
