So I’ve mained a demon hunter since Legion. I love the lore of the class but I’m kind of getting bored. It’s a super simple class so there isn’t much strategy. There’s also only one DPS spec so I can’t change it up every now and then. Today I decided to level an evoker with the prepatch event since I hadn’t tried the class yet. I expected it to be an average alt experience where it is fun but you don’t even considering wanting to main it. However, I absolutely love the class and am considering maining it in TWW.
This has led to an issue. The past 8 years I’ve rained this character and have developed an attachment. I’ve played her longer than any other character I’ve made. This isn’t really a simple class change but a change from my main.
Those who went from DH main to Evoker main, was it worth it? Also would be interested in hearing stories from people who have changed their mains after maining them for long periods of time.
I enjoy playing it is it easy to play not really but it fun when things click . It didn’t replace my main i play both .
My main before my Evoker actually was a havoc Demon Hunter that I also had since Legion funnily enough.
Truly my Dracthyr took everything away from my Demon Hunter I’ll be honest. I was pretty biased in the decision though to make him my main because I’ve been wanting a race that is not only something like Sauroks (Or WAS a Saurok) since MoP, but I also really wanted a race that had it’s own wings and could fly (I really wanted to play a High Arakkoa).
So on top of Dracthyr filling those wants pretty easily, the class itself felt really good to play. All of my abilities just feel as if they flow into one another. Hitting those procs just right timed with my empower abilities feels so good.
I’m not going to lie to you though, I’ve also missed the playstyle of my DH. I deleted him in a purge coming back to WoW in Shadowlands, which I don’t regret because well, they were all just characters I made as a kid really. Messy, reputations were all over the place, a million things disorganized in all my banks and bags. Wanted to start over, but I’m thinking of making another havoc DH as an alt.

Aug is oppressively strong. To the point where people will get mad at you for playing dev sometimes. Other than that really good pick.
I switched from DH to evoker for DF after also maining DH since legion. It was a rocky transition at first but evoker promised to be everything i wanted from DH (mobility and utility) but with other things i wanted more like range and a heal spec to off role in.
My transition from my previous main (mage) to DH was much easier because i was burnt out and needed change. Switching off DH was harder because i still liked it, and the changes it got going from SL to DF felt really good.
What made the transition easier was keeping my DH around and playing it occasionally. However, learning the nuances of a new class is something that is frustrating and takes time, and the gameplay becoming second nature takes even longer.
So there were many times were i was like “i’m done, i’m going back” and i would try and grind a bunch to catch my DH up, but about half way into doing that each time some switch would flick in my brain and it would be like “yeah nevermind i’m okay i like devastation again, we’re good”
Still happens sometimes TBH, so i keep my DH handy. I still have second thoughts though. Even now, less about going back to DH, but trying something new (or very old). Mage is fun again and a part of me wants to give that another go after 8-9 years of barely touching it, so i’m seeing if i can burn myself out of that one before launch time.
Edit because i want to add because i’m not sure i was very clear: I have more fun playing Devastation than i did playing Havoc. The low APM is a nice bonus for your wrist, as well. Aug is boring though, imo.

Personally I would main evoker. Great healers, Aug is amazing and very wanted, even their dps spec is doing really well (last time I checked) the class has great mobility as well as instant dragonflying.
The only thing that sucks about Evoker is the transmog. So if that is a major deal breaker for you you probably won’t like it.
Idk how DHs are doing. I’m mad they still haven’t released a 3rd spec. Maybe a ranged spec?
My two pieces of advice;
Don’t overthink it so much. Its a video game, you aren’t trading in your house or car or sig other. If you go with one and change your mind, its easy to switch.
On that note, we are going to have 2 weeks (sort of 3) with no real endgame content. Level them both if you are unsure, play around with each and their hero talents and see what feels better at 80 by week 3. You will have plenty of time for both even playing casually.
I’ve also played a DH since Legion, and if Evoker had had a tank spec, I might’ve switched mains for first time in 8 years.
I also went DH to mage! I disliked mage honestly, I was not good at it at all. Switching from mage to DH was super easy for me.
Was never a big fan of the DH, but got into a bit during remix because my wife loves them.
Also leveled an Evoker and promptly deleted him after getting to 70 and using his bronze for a few mounts.
Couldn’t figure how to play the class well or at least effectively.
Given a choice between the 2, I would got with a Dh.
So you’re wanting to go from one of the easiest classes in the game to one of the easiest classes in the game?
Why not play both? Picking up the lizard doesn’t mean you have to abandon your DH. It’s very normal to have multiple characters you play at a competitive level.
Evoker has 3 good options for play.
Devestation is extremely solid for it’s damage output; the mastery effect is great for having what I can best describe as a “Reverse execute” in that you will be able to burst hard at the start of the fight and you’ll also have a plethora of good cleave/aoe options.
Aug is always in demand but it also requires a… unique personality to appreciate since you have to accept and internalize that you aren’t going to show high on the meters for your direct damage output, people will always be bawling about how they’re meta and if you don’t have good DPS on your team… you’re going to feel real bad. But if you have some humility and a willingness to ignore the haters it’s a really fun and rewarding spec to play with plenty of ways to support your fellow players including buffing the tank (blistering scales can give a chunk of armor that is hard to ignore; I was able to get it to like 7% physical damage reduction), Healers (Focus magic gives them some magic regen from your abilities and theres another ability that doubles their range and gives them the ability to cast on the move) and of course your DPS (prescience and Ebon might will never not be welcome) while also having mobility boosts with your buff, your bronze aura and Zephyr (which also gives AOE resist).
Preservation is your healing spec and I wish I could tell you more but I haven’t healed since wrath
