Should I be using addons?

Why shouldn’t I keep everything at default?

I have this strange feeling I’m incurring life penalties and bad karma for even thinking about using addons or changing my key-bindings.

Need some advice or therapy on this.

I agree if you are letting your mental health suffer over the decision to use addons or not…you do, in fact, need therapy to help resolve that.

Its up to you. Dont let others dictate that. Using add-ons is purely a matter of personal choice. Same with keybinding. Im a clicker, people can cry about it all they want but its more comfortable for me.

Use the addons.
It is like refusing a lawyer, when you need one then you should get one.
You will feel much better about yourself.

Nobody is going to cry that you’re a clicker and bad at the game. You’ll just get removed from groups tired of carrying your underperforming self.

Just like nobody is going to care if the OP is using addons or not until he’s in group content and not living up to expectations and standards.

Never said i was bad at the game. Im not the best but then no one is. Its just a game. That said. I only mentioned it to op because they mentioned they were concerned for changing their keybindings.

i’m level 47 on an alt and have yet to use an addon, i get the appeal, but none of them interest me anymore.

If you exclusively click spells, you certainly are not playing very well but I agree that is perfectly fine. You pay your $15 or however many gold pieces to play the game so play it how you want to.

Just know that the moment you wade into group content territory, you are subject to the whims and expectations of the group. As the saying goes, it’s your $15 to play the game but our $X amount to say you suck and don’t want to play with you. Replace X with the group size minus yourself.

Ive done higher content before though as a clicker. Its more comfortable for me. Why people have this thing with gatekeeping content just because others play the only way that feels comfortable to them is mind boggling.

Either way its irrelevant. Less people from what ive seen do much group stuff anymore anyway. Only the guilds but even then its low.

If people get so upset over .02 less dps, then they might need to step away from the game and reevaluate their lives. Now this is not directed at you mind, you just happen to be who i am replying to.

Pleb. Use binary for it all. True l33tzor haxx0rz communicate with the CPU directly.

I believe this is going to be directly related to what your goals in the game are. For example, if all you want to do is explore and do world content, you’re not going to get a lot of benefit out of having them.

On the other hand, if you have a desire to “master” content, mythic+, raids, or even solo content like Torghast or the Mage tower, understanding addon’s and how to use them properly is going to be a must.

Anything which:

  • Assists you with understanding what is happening around you and performing your rotation efficiently
  • Assists you with your own interrupts and defensives
  • Assists you with your parties interrupts and cooldowns
  • Assists with party communication

On a personal note: I find mastery the most fun part of the game, no matter what content I’ve chosen to do, including world content, and addon’s play a huge role with this, even more so with group play. I create my own weak auras because my visual needs are different than others, and it allows me to prioritize what I see and when I see it.

Side note: Mastery cannot exist without measurements, you can’t get better without them (See Speed of Trust by Steven Covey). This is why damage meters need to exist in some fashion. This doesn’t mean dps is king, but learning to maximize it for yourself while also dealing with mechanics is part of mastery.

Add-ons are helpful and I recommend using them, but they ARE completely optional.

By definition this is false. Someone is the best.

It’s really not that optional.

You want to explore the world, you’re either using handynotes addon or you’re arriving at some point of interest and searching wowhead for wtf even is this.

You need to kill rares for your weekly ZM patterns within patterns? Yep, handynotes to know where they are and when they’re up.

You need to do a non-trivial dungeon? You are probably going to need a way to track your performance and the performance of others to troubleshoot problems. Something that monitors who used an interrupt is pretty huge. Tracking the offensive and defensive cooldowns of others keeps DPS from all blowing their stuff on the same pull (in theory) and lets the tank and healer know whats available for surviving the next big pack.

Imagine doing a raid without at least one of these: BigWigs, a raid-specific weak aura package or DBM. Sure, some fights are fine, but not knowing when the next big scary ability is going to happen is going to get you killed. And I’d bet 95% of the people who claim to raid without any of these are raiding with people who do who call out the information in Discord for the people that refuse to properly prepare or they’re following people that do around the boss room riding coattails to success.

Damage meters, those are optional. But we all make mistakes and have room to improve, and choosing to not use damage meters is essentially saying you’d rather not be aware of your mistakes and just live in blissful ignorance.

because the default UI in this game…sucks. lol.
Adding keybinding helped a lot, but they need to make it more like the Dominos addon.
making the game UI have a Farmhud like overlay would be great too. Perfect for farming or healing in group content…you can see where everyone is without having to use that tiny map.

I’m confused. Why would you experience life penalties or something like that for changing up addons or keybinds? The UI is your home and should be renovated to a point where you’re content and capable of functioning in a manner you enjoy and are proud of.

The best piece of advice I can give is the UI is meant to be tinkered with and you should experiment with it freely. You can always go back.

I’m not sure if I’m getting myself across here…

Isn’t the game designed without addons in mind?

Do they even enable the additional action bars?

By they I mean the people making the content.

Shouldn’t I be able to be as good with the default UI?

Edit: Life penalties? I don’t know. Maybe an omniscient Titan is watching me. Maybe a Blue is watching me. Maybe some other player is watching me. Maybe they know and they judge me for messing with things I shouldn’t use. Maybe cookie dough should be cooked and kept separate from vanilla ice cream.

No. This mathematically does not work. And no, the game is designed with addons in mind.

The default UI is terrible with conveying information. It’s absolutely awful at it. It does its job terribly. Addons exist because conveying information is something which needs to be improved on and why Blizzard is finally (in the 10th expansion) addressing it.

Literally, WAT!? This makes no sense. How would someone know or care what you’re doing? So long as you’re not violating TOS, it’s completely irrelevant. I run 39 addons for the sake of cosmetic / aesthetic appeal and information retrieval. Ain’t nobody slain me in my personal life for making my own life easier.
