Expanding the pet system should always be desirable. Shiny pets will be massive boost. Let players farm for their favorites, expand AH opportunities, and just like in Pokemon can have events for some kind of shinies. Honestly, there’s so much more Blizz can add to the pet battles and we should welcome it.

Shinies would be interesting but we already have different colorations of individual pet types in WOW.
I’d like to see augmentation stones. Each pet has one to three stone slots (depending on rarity) and you can fill these with stones that update its stats. You obtain the stones by battling. Each battle has a chance to provide a stone. Chances are higher on PVP battles.
Though as mentioned above, a mobile battle pet app would be cool as well.
