Okay new warrior tank this expansion and everything I’ve read says Shield block has a higher priority than Ignore Pain.
But the math doesn’t work out.
Ignore Pain is a 50% damage reduction. Currently block chance is 26% and blocking damage reduction is 34%.
So even if I have shield block up 100% of the time it’s only 34% damage reduction.
If I have ignore pain up 100% of the time I get that and a 26% chance to block on top.
IP has a damage threshold limit and SB doesn’t. SB can also critically block and blocks all physical attacks for a 6 second duration. In essence, you will find that IP doesn’t last very long under duress. IP is there to smooth out damage, not be relied upon to mitigate it.
You can use both. There is a balance between using rage for threat and IP/SB. You might be surprised at how fast the rage is spent. The only real suggestion I can toss at you is to run some lower level M+ and get a feel for it.
They changed Revenge this expansion to no longer be 100% free on dodge/parry. You missed some good times! I’m not a huge fan of the current Prot model and wish they would have left BfA Prot alone and just toned down the damage we were able to dish out.
I’ll tell you something else, Prot Warrior is a proactive tank and that means you need to know what is around the next corner. This isn’t BDK land where you just react to what happens to you. If you play Prot that way you will die, just like that (snaps fingers). Good luck friend!
Unless what you are facing is mostly magic damage. Like good old Star Augur from Nighthold. Not all bosses have a melee attack, and if they do, it doesn’t do much if they have a cast they can spam. Such as the last boss in NW. Sadly we cannot block spells =(
IP feels better then shield block in most scenarios in M+ to me, it’s just a pain to keep up, and it throws Revenge completely out the window. Also requires some weak aura’s to manage correctly, which is fairly annoying.
Ignore pain reduces up to 50% of the damage from an attack, up to it’s shield amount.
You have a, let’s say, 10k shield. You are hit for 20k. That hit will take your entire shield.
You have the same 10k shield and are hit for 30k. You still only stop 10k damage.
Shield block reduces physical attacks by a large amount, and can critically block, which stops double the amount. Against physical damage, blocking is far more efficient.
IP is only more efficient against magical damage or bleeds, as blocking does not affect either.
The only calculation is, it only can absorb up to 50% of an incoming hit. If the hit is more than double the shield’s total amount, it will simply wipe out the shield.
If you are using IP instead of SB as a rule you are simply doing it wrong. It might feel good to you, but it feels terrible to your healers. Trust. SB for physical 100% over IP. IP is there to smooth out damage and mitigate magical/bleeds/non physical damage.
