I was walking through the halls of Torghie-borgie, blasting some opera and having a glass of wine with my mistweaver co-raid leader discussing strategies for this week’s heroic. Gothic architecture, profound music and a robust grenache really set the mood for some deep thoughts.
I explained to him some issues with magical damage mitigation in this expansion, and we thought about an interesting idea regarding SB and SR. What if they shared their own CD and were exclusive, forcing the tank to choose one based on the fight/phase and assisting with magic damage mitigation. Maybe this was something in the past that was changed, I honestly quit WoW after we down the Lich King in Wrath, and returned a month or two before Shadowlands to re-acquaint myself.
I realize no blues will read this, but what do you guys think of that ? What solutions have you pondered regarding magic damage mitigation as a prot warrior.
This is meant to be fun poop shooting, not a debate or job application to blizzard.
No, that was not a thing in Wrath.
Magic DR is a big vulnerability for prot and the forums are flooded with posts containing suggestions to solutions. The only thing we can do is make use of our CDs like shield wall, demo shout and spell reflect
SR is a joke against multicasters. If SR had two auras one for reflect a spell and another for 20% magic Dr would feel super good.
Or we could block magic direct damage for reduced effectiveness. 30%? This way our mastery stat will be much more attractive.
I.e. i have 36.78% dr on blocks (based on my shield 226 block stat), if i get hit by a direct spell i would block 11.03% of that damage (22.06% if i crit block).
Shield wall, ignore pain, demoralizing shout, and spell reflect all mitigates magic damage. What more does a tank need? Interrupts on the correct casts from your group are going to be #1 magic mitigation in a dungeon.
Paladins block spells (if talented) as their only active mitigation increases armor only. They do not have a spell reflect, or ignore pain, or demoralizing shout. They have a self heal, they have essentially a shield wall (ancient kings), and an 8s immunity (if talented, and there are some competitive choices on that tree.)
I would love if prot warriors were m+ kings again. The meta has shifted to huge burst damage and kiting though, and guess which class is best at that.
I don’t know if tanks have ever been balanced quite as well as they are now honestly.
Prot Palas Mastery helps against all kind of damage as long you stay in your consacration and have a lot more heals than warriors. There are high level Prot Palas doing M+ competitive Noobadin and Regya have 2300+ Io. We have Druid tanks, Monk Tanks and Pala tanks 2300+ but Prot Warriors and Blood Dks are having a hard time doing M+20 and above. We are underperforming. I dont want to be meta, just want to be a viable tank.
He is timing 18 keys, but it is worth noting that Kessig is ranked #12 protection warrior in the world and isn’t exactly referring to viability at 10+ keys. Granted, he doesn’t have much competition at that level as the spec representation is virtually non-existent for Protection warrior in keys that high (probably signifying that he is a uniquely dedicated and capable player and a rarity). He is probably referring to viability at 20+ keys where there is only three Prot warriors in the world who have timed a 20 key.
He did in fact refer to 20+ keys, but perhaps he truly meant viable at collecting pets or something.
It’s also worth noting that the previous #1 ranked Protection warrior in the world complained grumpily on stream about not being a vengeance demon hunter and how tank balance was toxic, saying “why can’t protection warriors be good again” before rerolling to brewmaster (which he was gearing when I last checked his stream).
But maybe you should explain to both Kessig and the previous R1 Protection Warrior how to play Protection properly to be viable at that level. I’m sure they could learn a lot.

I’m sure this is supposed to mean something.
And prot is viable for those keys. What is your point.
3 people in the world have timed them, so I guess so.
Yet…
It sure seems like there’s a lot of Vengeance and Brewmaster timing 22’s. Like, a lot of them. Hundreds, even.
Just dwell on that thought.
Nah, I’m sure he has no unique insight into how to play his class. He’s only in the top 20, what the !@#$ does he know. Probably a pleb, barely knows how to play his class. Probably scraping the bottom of the barrel. L2P lel. It’s u not de class broe

To be fair , how many average players are doing 15+ keys, 15 keys sure… but higher than that? Probably less than 5% of the player base go that far
And something like 1%-3% of those are Prot warriors. Imagine what a tiny percentage achieve that progression.
The point is, if this is someone who has been in the top ten, he is a vanishingly small number. The player isn’t the problem. You don’t get to that point unless you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing.
And I’m talking specifically to someone who wants to point to the cream on top and say, ‘see, someone did it!’ Well, look at the actual feedback from those players and it echoes what you’re seeing in the lower tiers.
Literally the former R1 warrior in progression said that his class was holding him back, and acted on it by rerolling.
You can’t just take some L2P elitist line. As you go down to 15s, the representation is just as bad and the feedback is the same. Go down to 10s, same thing. Something is wrong. Read the writing on the wall.
Some tuning is probably needed. Can you advance up to top 1000? If you’re absolutely excellent, lucky where it counts, have the resources and the team, yeah. But it’s still quite clearly being held back relative to other tanks and is not the best tank spec right now. That is affecting players on all levels, what few of them are still playing it.
Community perception is not always based on herd mentality, in other words, and it does everyone a disservice to wave off the combination of feedback on all levels as well as player representation numbers and the overall rankings.

Yeah I’m on your side on that note bud lol. The class needs help. Or they need to adjust how we work in someway , I think it’s too late for an overhaul of the class
