I had taken a break after BC and came back to my guild and the game around Ulduar in Wrath of the Lich King.

During that time, my guild absorbed another, y’all know how that goes. Many of the players were decent, some were…

So one of those is a Troll Hunter that for some reason is considered the god king of raid DPS, name withheld I’m not that big of a jerk…

I noticed, being a former guild/raid leader that this particular Hunter and his Rogue friend die almost every single encounter. While they do good damage, they also literally stand in fire and scream for heals on ventrillo.

The Rogue, he was shot 5 times at an ATM and we didn’t see him for months. I’m really happy he survived, can’t even imagine. So we’ll just focus on that Hunter.

So one evening we have everything cleared and have nothing to do. He knows I was the Main Tank and Raid Leader in BC and wants to do some heroics.

Sure man, let’s do it.

This Hunter could not trap to save his life, in fact he melee’d a mob in his frost trap and broke it himself at least four times. He just sort of used Feign Death on CD and his pet just randomly face pulled stuff from the far corners of the instance.

Afterwards they want to do a little PVP, hey Kolben you’ve done a couple BGs come with us. Sure man, let’s do it.

The first Hunter I have ever seen in my life try to go toe to toe with a Rogue using Raptor Strike. This young man was a Conqueror like myself too, meaning he had done a couple BGs…

This player might be the worst I have ever spent time around. His one saving grace is that miraculously he did about as much damage as any other Hunter in the guild for a given fight, until he stood in fire anyway.

This guy would die to a camp fire, I swear. Will remember him for all time.

Okay, what do you got?

Wailing Caverns group had just started, one of the group members was a warlock.

I’m the tank, I do the first pull, warlock runs up and starts meleeing alongside me. No pet out, no dots cast, only melee.

After the fight is over, I’m about to say something when she runs past me to more mobs. As I’m running up I see her die. She tried to melee the mobs again. I just said something like “Wait for me to pull the mobs” as she was running back, no response.

The run continues, she makes it back to us, continues using melee only. Then runs past me again and gets killed again, same way. She is ressed this time and IMMEDIATELY runs back to the mobs for a rematch. Gets killed again, says “I have to go” and leaves group.

Total warlock spells cast: 0.

I was a guest to MC with my in-game friend’s guild, and the Staff of Dominance dropped from Golemagg. Unsure what was typed, but I sat down next to a Stalagmite and /emote talked to it after whispering for the staff. Me being a really old looking gnome may have added to the uh…effect.

It was one of the most intense moments of my life up 'till that point, and would be my first epic.

They gave it to me. T_T

That is super awful oh my goodness lol

I was leveling some alts with a group of friends. We were doing Wailing Caverns, and Stinging Viper dropped.

One of my friends was playing a shaman and another…a rogue, I think? I forget which class he was. Anyway, my rogue friend rolls first, and he rolls a 2. So the shaman is just like WOO it’s mine!

He rolls a 1 and the rogue gets it.

The tears.

Call it what you will, but when I was in Goon Squad (private guild) in early BC, a guy asked if he could join. I told him that it was a private guild but he could join if he farmed up 200 Bear Flanks. A week later he had done it, I told an officer about his determination and we all laughed.

He didn’t get in.

We also had the server convinced that it was a pay2play guild with seperate, more expensive tiers that allowed you better content with the guild. Top spot was a raid position in the main raid for like $150 a month. There was even a website we made with pricing info.

People gave us crap all the time about it and we always got a good laugh about that.

My at-the-time-bf and I (mage and warlock) were leveling in hillsbrad questing in the mine area when we came across a tauren warrior getting ganked by an alliance rogue. Naturally we get involved and kill the rogue and we also made our first WoW friend. He had 2 other friends that he played with, a priest and shaman. Well look at that, we had a five-man - we pretty much spent most of Vanilla leveling and running dungeons together.

Eventually we were questing in desolace (doing that quest where you have to choose a Kolkar clan) when we spot a gnome mage in the area questing as well. Naturally we killed him. He rezzes and we kill him again. This continues until eventually he calls for guildies to help and about 5-6 level 60s show up and destroy us. But we didn’t let that stop us - lol. We spent like the next two hours rezzing at the same time, targeting only the mage gnome, and killing him before the 60s got us. We had a lot of fun doing that – just laughing together and griefing the gnome.

I often think back to that night and nothing has compared to it in any other mmo. So much laughter. Progression wasn’t the most important thing. It was just pure, unstructured fun - even tho we were dying as well.

The one I will never forget was during WotLK. This was the first expansion I actually made it to max level and was introduced to the concept of raiding. ICC was my favorite and I got into (through a little nepotism) the top guild on my server at the time. I was only an alternate, but I would always be online doing something or another during raid times just in case I got called in.

One night I did get in and fought through many of the encounters, but then the main raiders came online so I had to step aside and let them finish the raid. I was bummed I couldn’t see it through to the end, so I went to mine and pick herbs in Stormpeaks.

My heart nearly exploded when my NPC Scan went off and it took me a few seconds to realize that it was the Time-Lost Proto Drake that had set off my alarm. Adrenaline instantly flooded my system and my hands were shaking. I had never even seen this creature before even when I was camping for it. I had read the stories of fellow campers online and was sure that it was either going to be a corpse or that someone would beat me to it. But I was wrong.

I tagged it and fell from the sky, bubbling before impact to prevent certain death. The TLPD followed me down and after a short fight, I felled the mythical beast and claimed my long sought after reward. Even though I didn’t get the Lich King kill that night, I still walked away with the best loot I could’ve asked for at that time when I wasn’t even looking for it. It was a good time.

Back in vanilla I Main’d a Shaman. At about level 55 I was getting burned out grinding mobs, so I took a break to my favorite area; the barrens. I was a skinner/LW at the time. I was fishing in the pools out front of WC and on a whim I decided to farm up enough scales to make a deviate belt. So I made one after an hour of farming WC, and then I’m like “I’m gonna make someone’s day”.

I went into the crossroads and inspected level 15-18 leather wearers until I found a guy with a crappy gray belt on still. Got some wrapping paper, gifted it up and mailed it to him. Didn’t really give it another thought.

Well fast forward about a month later. I get an in game letter from the guy I sent it to. He looked me up from the made by tag, and wrote me a thank you letter telling me he just recently hit 40 and had been using it up til he got a mail belt. (I think he was a Hunter)

Had totally forgotten about giving the belt away, but it made my day.

Late in TBC, several of the guilds I regularly stepped in to heal raids for were doing alt runs, so I got to go on a variety of classes. The most memorable of those occasions wound up being a Lurker kill on my warlock, and not her first either.

Basically, I’d discovered that because warlocks have Unending Breath, I could actually stay under the surface, rather than just duck under during the spout. I’d done it several weeks in a row.

Well, one week I forgot. There I was frantically draining life trying to figure out what I was taking damage from, one of the healers was trying to heal me until I died. As soon as I was dead and looked at the recap, I busted out laughing and once Lurker was down, let everyone else in on it. Of course I got ribbed about it for a while.

A quick story about how I finally decided what class to play.

After playing WoW for a short time I found out some kids from my school had already started playing and were playing Horde. I had already made a Warrior, Mage, and Warlock on a different server but none of them had really clicked with me. I decided to make a Troll Rogue on a whim because none of my school friends had picked Rogue.

Shortly after character creation I came across the quest to recover a medallion. It was in the back of a cave filled with hostiles. After killing 1 or 2 mobs it dawned on me I could search for the medallion in stealth without fighting anything! I crept around the cave until I finally came across the named mob holding my prize. I quickly dispatched him and stealthed my way back out of the cave.

Stealth instantly became my favorite ability I had ever used in WoW. It really felt to me like I had practically cheated the system to finish the quest with so little effort. Rogue had to be the best class in the game. I ended up playing the Rogue exclusively throughout Vanilla and TBC.

So all in all not the most exciting story but it is one of my earliest WoW memories and I hold it dear.

This is a story from when I first started reading the forums. It’s not mine, but it’s stuck with me throughout the years.

An orc player and his friends were raiding Lakeshire. This guy spots the two kids standing at the end of the dock, and runs towards them, axe raised. He clicks on the girl and –

– He gets a quest.

The quest to get the little girl’s necklace from the bottom of the lake. After a moment of disbelief, the player hits accept. Dives down, gets the necklace turns it in.

For 250 reputation with Stormwind.

I was a Dwarf warrior without a helm and kept seeing other warriors running around with Green Iron Helm. I asked one who was passing by Moonbrook about how he obtained his helm and he offered to make me one and mail it to me for free.

I know that really has to suck for him and glad he lived, but I could not help but to find it a little ironic that a rogue player got ambushed while getting money.

One time I was home sick with the stomach flu but we had to raid Gruuls that night and I was the designated mage tank. Right before the pull of the first boss I had to run my laptop into the bathroom because I was about to puke.

I did my spell steal, spammed my fireballs, all while puking in the toilet smashing my two button. In between puking I would check to see when I needed to spell steal and would hit it and puke.

We got the boss down and went onto gruul and I was feeling a little better. We ended up killing gruul, I died that fight because I had to puke again and I remember there was some mechanic with moving around or something that I didn’t do so I died. I ended up getting an item off him I really really wanted (for some reason I think it was a trinket it could have just been tier gear though). I just remember I was so happy I stuck it out

Going in to raid WOTLK Naxxramas. Military wing. Everything was going fine till we got to the balcony after clearing trash. One member of the raid accidentally hit auto-run and his character pulled all four groups of mobs.

Chaos ensued. Healers and squishies went down quick. Sturdier warriors and dps held on. But one by one they all eventually fell. After a frantic three minutes the only left alive were the main tank and myself; a blood elf holy Paladin.

All in the vent were calling to wipe and reset. But no! My tank would not die. Not so long as I had the mana to heal him! My tank and I were a team and when he didn’t want to give up, I wasn’t going to give up!

Slowly, eleven mobs became 10. 10 became 9. 9 became 8. It was everything we could do to stay on top of the damage. Even as the enemies numbers slowly dwindled, our resources depleted as well. He couldn’t generate as much rage, my mana resources were pushed to the brink as I relied on spirit and sapping enemies for just a bit more juice.

Heal. Stun. Holy shock. Fear one of the undead. Heal. Mana tap. Heal. Get in one or two swings to increase damage.

6 enemies to go. Now 5. Now 4!!!

Vent was going insane! We could do this! We could clear this entire balcony on our own. Just the two of us, working together, pushing our abilities and class knowledge to the very limit!

3 more to go! 2! 1!

The last mob fell. And as my tank and I breathed a sigh of relief, vent erupted into a cacophonous roar of celebration! No one could believe we did it. We barely believed it.

We could wipes and reset and killed them properly in a few minutes. Instead, a stubborn tank and his stubborn healer dragged the fight on for a little over twenty minutes.

No one cared. It was a victory. A glorious one that ramped up morale and sent us on a winning streak. We fully cleared the entire wing that evening even though before we’d been having trouble.

It was a glorious moment in WoW.

STORY TIME!
Chants “story time” endlessly.

Okay okay okay!
At level 49 (this character mid-vanilla) I was going to go help a friend of mine do SM ARM and while running there on mount nearing the meeting stone I saw a lvl 60 troll hunter attacking lowbies. ALL OUT WAR ENSUED! 1v1, 60 hunter vs 49. It was a draw! I kept her in melee range almost the entire fight knowing she’d wreck me in ranged combat. But near the end she got ranged to fire and I used poison shot just before dying which killed her after me!

Funnily enough the day after when I was lvl 50 in Southshire with that same friend (he’s an irl friend) I was chilling chatting with him and BAM saw a 60 warrior in mixed tier gear, orc male, on a mount looking to gank SS watching the base.
WAR ENSUED! I went for him and it was brutal! It was ridiculously tough due to the level gap but I just barely managed to win the fight! Then being the vanilla player I was and he was the higher level ganker, I camped his ars. He’d res, charge me, get frozen end up dying, then res try to run but get concussive shot.

After a few more kills went by I was sitting waiting with trap up. I remembered hearing of rogues disarming traps but never seen it before. Then suddenly my trap sprang up oddly. Without ever having seen it I knew right there and then it was a rogue and I said outloud irl “I’m Dead” BAM 60 UD rogue jumped me, warrior ressed and charged me same time, I just jumped up and around and died fast.

TeeHee I love wpvp stories! I’ll tell more later!!
