What if blizz said they were sharding only the starting zones (Durotar, Elwynn, Tirisfal, etc.) for the first two weeks of launch in order to help with over population in those specific areas?
Would that be a deal breaker to you? If so, how would you propose blizz handles the huge population of players in those specific areas on launch day?
I'd prefer dynamic respawns over any type of sharding whatsoever. But they did say "warts and all" so I kind of expect them to release classic to the wild and let the cluster fudge work itself out over a few weeks.
The chaos you're trying to avoid is part of the fun.
I was thinking about this a few days ago. That they might use some of their modern systems to keep servers from exploding for the first week or two.
I don't want it, but I'd accept it as long as we don't have to deal with sharding in the long term.

I also think dynamic spawns would be a better solution.
Sharding is just not stable enough of a solution, it sounds good on paper but in the end you get weird things happening with people appearing and disappearing.

it's coincidental you bring this up because i was just thinking of it earlier this morning. i think it would be preferable. obviously six starting zones will thin the herd out a little bit, but it's still going to be a mess at launch. dynamic respawn rates make escorting quests and the initial cave quests difficult or impossible.
*edit no it would not be a deal-breaker. most of the early zones are just annoying obstacles to me. westfall is one of the better early zones.

Any sharding is a deal breaker. It has no place in a MMORPG.
Well I am pretty sure with some of the leaked info there are some changes and toggle options people need to deal with or just dont play it.
It will not be a 1 to 1 re-release.
I would be fine either way. In reality it will only be the first week, maybe 2 tops that would be an issue.
Then the masses are spread out.

I would prefer if they went one way or the other with the starting zones to do dynamic spawns. In perfect wow world people would just all group up and share the zone but ya as much as some might love to think the community worked that way it doesn't specially at launch where there will be a heavy amount logging in when the servers go live it will be a !@#$ show.
Yeah it will truly be a rat race to 60 just like any other release.
All the anecdotes about the journey are just that.
There are groups of people that will rip thru the content no different than BFA or any other xpac. Sure they might stall getting 40 peeps coordinated at one time but that will likely be the only set back.
Just play the game the way you want to and not worry about what others are doing.

What is "dynamic spawns"? How does "dynamic spawns" handle 300 orcs in valley of trials waiting on scorpids to respawn?
Is this a private server thing?

It's both a live server and pserver thing. The more people in a zone killing things the faster stuff respawns.

Hmm well seeing as I won't be going into this with friends I must say it would be ok for me; however it would terrible for those with friends at the start.
10/30/2018 05:54 AMPosted by LagspikeI'd prefer dynamic respawns
I am afraid of if it if ever it were to go beyond the first weeks and placed all over the world.
If resources are scarce - so be it (no dynamic respawns for herbs/veins ever ever ever - just possibly increase so spawn rates and randomize locations)
I would have no problem with dynamic respawns like the private servers have
Dynamic respawns for sure, but it's still never enough. When you have hundreds in one zone, a mob spawning faster isn't enough - unless you also generate totally new spawn locations.
With that said, let it work itself out. Meanwhile I'll be getting that exploration XP and grinding mobs, staying ahead of the leveling curve.
Its super satisfying to be on a packed server and arrive at STV to only have it be a ghost town.

this is how it starts , were just gonna shard the starting zones,, then later they just shard everything

Except it's not needed any where else. Yet.
The issue is the starting zones being a huge bottle neck at launch.
If and when populations drop the issue will be sharding verses hard server merges.
Which it seems most are forseeing as a highly likely scenario.
Imo. Sharding the starting zones is feasible. I just don't like the idea.
Let the cluster bomb go off.
It will thin the herd a bit. The rest enjoy of us enjoy competitive forced grouping.
Some will be starting all/most of their characters before they do anything.
To get their names before anyone takes it and get that resed XP going.
Fresh server launches are an awesome experience.

The 10-20 zones, at least as Horde, are even worse than the 1-10s bottle neck wise. You can clear 10 in under 5 hours, even if you have no idea what you are doing. Whereas most people going 10-20 age going to take 10+hours to do so.
I'd add that dynamic respawns won't be nearly as bad as they where on Lightbringer or Northdale, simply because those realms bad like 10k+ pale on them at once for launch. And even then the dynamic spawns weren't terrible outside of cave mobs respawning faster than you could clear them.
It wouldn’t make me not play, but I’d rather have temporary dynamic spawns and queues for the first few weeks.
