you only need to code it once. it just runs itself as it is connected to the real time update of the sharding system. the benefit of cloud servers is real time updates are easier to code. so it runs and kicks in when needed and deletes itself when not needed, in real time. its just a shard… you understand it’s just a shard . it works like a shard but has a couple additional parameters – create drop down when shard created, to support the shard, remove the entry if shard no longer needed. since the code already checks if sharding is needed, it fixes itself in real time.
Technically it IS a patch if that sort of thing wasn’t present in the client we had access to during the demo. Its predecessors might not have been public, but it’s still a patch.
But isn’t having a queue all of a sudden worse player experience after you already invested time into your character only to discover a week or two later that you have a large queue now?
Wouldn’t it be better to know right off the bat that there is a 5 hour queue so you can roll on a different server?
Generally you don’t actually call your release version a patch, and even if you did then it’s all just 1 big “patch” anyway that they have to make in order to make it function like a Classic client. So again, no additional patching is needed.
You’re trying to make it sound like it’s all this big extra unnecessary work when it’s nowhere near what you’re suggesting it is. They’re already making all sorts of changes to the client right now to prepare it for Classic.
we’re seeing updates in real time on this forum thread. we see each other’s posts/replys and changes in real time. thats the same concept. on the fly. server too full. make character on stormrage 2 shard. then stormrage1 doesnt have to have players vanishing before your eyes .
Yes but those games and their artwork are streamed to your computer through the Internet browser. None of their files actually end up existing on your computer.
WoW’s artwork and data files exist on your hard drive and connect through the internet to a server. It’s a completely different animal.
I don’t understand why is sharding needed for starting zones. It takes 20 minutes to move out of the starting zone, and then population will start to diverge, and more people from queue can log in. 20 minutes of wait for next batch of people isn’t that long to wait during the initial character creation. And it will make it more stream lined where people would not clog up an are later on since the first batch would always be slightly ahead.
the sharding tech is automated and functions in real time. so if the menu for a generated shard is coded into the generation of the shard, it will also happen in real time. when the shard no longer needed, the code can also remove the shard from the list, in real time. so when a new player logs in, they will either see the new shard in the list when the click the server name or they will not and instead see the main server if its no longer needing the shard. all automatically updated with the shard itself.
To be fair the client is a local thing, meaning once it’s in our hands if Blizzard wants to modify it then they do need to issue a patch.
Though there are ways around that, like what I noted above where you could make the client simply not show a dropdown menu if there is no perma-shards of the server.
On top of that issuing a patch isn’t really that a big deal either for a PC exclusive.
On a side note the old WoW launcher basically was just an internet browser that only connected to one site. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Battle net launcher was the same way.
It’s an effective way of streaming basic text, images, and video files.
its sorta like how when servers are brought down for maintenance, you will eventually see some are online and some are not. that’s real time updating. you can even watch the server list and see your server go online in real time.
And I guess everyone will just choose not to be in Silithus during the AQ event and the gates opening.
Or, are you saying that Blizzard should shard that event which is WELL BEYOND launch or the starting areas?
I guess those massive WPVP battles between Southshore and Tarren Mill won’t be happening, either. Or, do you suggest that Blizzard shard those events (which will also be WELL BEYOND launch and starting areas), also?
