So I have been doing the alliance side story of bfa; I’m a huge lore nerd but I cant shake the feeling that her voice acting does not fit her character. During the War of the Ancients she was but a little girl and became the adoptive daughter of Tyrande and now that I listen to her voice, she seems too old. I know she would be around the 10 thousand year old mark but I always would imagine her with a younger voice. Does anyone else feel this way?
Even Night Elves grow up after 13,000 years. She’s one of the top ranked members of the Night Elf military. She commanded a base named after her in Feralas.
she was but a little girl
“Andu-fawah-dwor, fwiends! Wets go get’em mean scarytons and zombersh!”
I can dig it.
I realize you’re supposed to be making her sound infantile but I just imagine it like Homestar Runner.
“Mewonade an’ marshmewwos! Gonna show dem Hode what da Kawdowei awe aw about! Hup-to skidoo!”
I agree - in the sense that I know her current voice makes total sense, and it is purely my own impression that she should sound young.
I understand she was a child when Tyrande met her nearly 10,000 years ago. I understand that:
Or how ever long it was.
I expected her to sound like Thisalee Crow. More youthful. Not like Judy Dench.
Listening to Shandris from WC 3, she sounded like Stacy Rowe from Daria - like a teenage girl. And that was not that long ago, considering Night Elf life spans.
She went from Stacy Rowe from Daria to Storm from X- Men: The Animated Series in the mid 90s.
(Yes, I am old. Those cartoons probably came out before some of you were born)
I think of Thisalee as being a much younger night elf, somewhere close to my own character’s age.
Yeah I think of Thisalee as younger, as well. But I also think she is a Druid, and her exuberance and boisterous attitude was meant to show a “wild” side of Druidism as opposed to the more sedate and somber Druidism we usually see.
So a mix of youth but also her character.
Shandris sort of went from youthful lackey to Wizened Old Mistress at Arms.
It’s been a good while since I refreshed my elf lore, but haven’t the 10,000+ Night Elves started showing signs of rapid aging since the destruction of the World Tree in WC3?
Shandris sounds exactly as she’s supposed to. Now if only her voice lines in the War Campaign thus far had been more like 8.2. With more of throwing insults at the Horde and other evils and less cheerleading for Jokeman Redridge aka “Not Rambo” and Blue Berry Kael’thas.
As for Thisalee they need to just scrap her entirely. That voice is horrendous and an insult to Kaldorei. Just like the druid waiting for Players and Malfurion at the stary of Val’sharah next to Cenarius. Night Elves don’t sound like Skater Tomboys or Every Loli Streamer Girl.
I’m fine with variety and all…
But yeah, that druid was JARRINGLY squeaky. So bad I immediately recall the offender. It was more of a dryad voice.
Agreed. Way more suited to a Dryad.
Awww. Thisalee is my favorite follower from both my Garrison and the Dreamgrove. I like her voice, even if I did expect her to sound a lot more… unstable, lets say, but her potential for sadism makes it passed her adorableness in her “You scratch my back, I’ll claw yours” line and others.
I think Shandris’ voice is great, though. I don’t imagine Shandris coming off as a young Elf any more after questing with her in Feralas in the Cataclysm revamp, though I can see her having an entirely different tone when with Tyrande and Malfurion during peaceful family times with them.
I actually like Sandris’ voice, it would be to me really odd if the over ten millennia old commander of all Kaldorei forces sounded like a teenager. We have enough of that in Anduin thanks.
Well… Thisalee is a druid of the Talon. A young one too, sort of the Kaldorei counterpart of the Kul Tiran Arthur Tradewind. That said, her voice sort of… well, It makes me think of a bird, in a sense. So I find it fitting… she literally fulfills her name and crows a lot.
Something along those lines. Jarod’s wife conveniently has met her end because the Night Elves lost much of the durability gifted upon them when the tree met its end.
In my first reply, I said it is entirely my own issue. I understand a 10,000 year old elf who lost her immortality would age. I was just expressing a mutual “catching of a drift” with the OP.
Mine and the OP’s expectation was contrary to what lore has evidence for. It was surprising. I admit the lore supports a haggard old Shandris with a throat that could kill a stogie in a single puff. I just expected different and I can agree with the OP on that.
I will say - rapid aging from the events of MT Hyjal is a good explanation for it.
Oh good. I genuinely thought I might be remembering wrong. Lore is always swimming fuzzily around in my head like pools of alcohol and oil.
Shandris’ voice also surprised me.
To be fair, the rapid aging idea came from Wolfheart, the same book that Maiev tried to kill Malfurion on the accusation of preventing the Night Elves getting their immortality back (something Malfurion was not actually around to have been able to do) and then said murder attempt and successful murders of Night Elf Mages and Worgen completely overlooked now.
I don’t think Blizzard actually had any plans for Maiev beyond Wolfheart until someone in the writers room had a “WHAT IF…” idea for Legion and proceeded to completely disregard most of the events of that book.
“WHAT IF” Maiev actually becomes friends with Demon Hunters!
“BRILLIANT, YOU’VE DONE IT AGAIN TODD! HERE’S A RAISE!!”
*everyone in the writers room proceeds to give Todd a standing ovation
In the quest Brotherly Love where you save Maiev at Black Rook Hold if you’re playing a Demon Hunter you get an additional line in the completion text:
- It's your turn to set me free, demon hunter. Let us destroy the Legion together.
As can be seen in this video:
