Hey guys…years ago during Warlords I made shaman, leveled it up and had fun with it but never raided with him because of how their dps sucked on elemental. Shelved it and never looked back.
Now that we are in Classic can I expect the class to be the same way? I read that enhancement is op with WF totem for leveling till 60 but once you do hit 60 its heal time which I dont want to be main heal. I want to be that damage dealing class from range that drops totems when needed and heals when needed. Is this something that could happen when I do get into raiding or will I be pigeoned holed into Resto?
I am not a big fan of changing specs 4 to 5 times a week based on what I am doing. Any advice?
Ele shaman don’t have the mana endurance really for raid dps. Its pretty much a pvp build, a darn good one at that.
Healing is more efficient and shaman can do that. In general, look at your tier set. Those sets are designed so they mostly match your intended raid role. Stray outside that, and its much harder to get gear for.
Dont let what I said stop you from trying it yourself though. Trying things is most of the fun.
So, what you might want to do, is build yourself an Ele/resto hybrid build and just heal in raids while wearing good heal gear and you won’t need to respec.
Unless the guild has 8 resto shamans in the raid, they’ll likely allow you as ele. It’s preferred over enhancement, but still not optimal. Totems are that much fun, and you make a nice backup healer for “oh crap” moments.
Just farm consumables and flasks and you’ll do “ok”.
Honestly? The fact that a guild downed both raids with almost half the guild being under level 60…
Any class and spec combo are valid. Play what you want. With 40 spots open in a raid, you’ll find a niche to fill.
pvp and 5 mans are where ele does good. That said, a ele build that goes into resto is a very good build that lets you dps in raids, when you are at bosses that th priest and druids dont have to dispell a bunch of stuff.
Was not uncommon back in the day for this to happen, since shamans can still heal really well without being deep into Resto. And since mana tide loses its significance the better geared people gets, it makes sense.
So yes, you can, but you must also be willing to heal, at all times.

You can play 30/21 and heal in raids. The gear has spell power and healing so it will benefit elemental spec too.

I mean, you can, but it can be pretty unfun to do it that way. For example, if I want to play moonkin, but then I spend half the fight out of mana and not able to do anything except whack the boss melee hoping for clearcasting procs, thats not very fun for me.
If I spec fire but so much crap in MC/BWL are immune or highly resistant to fire, im not gonna have much fun as a fire mage.
Etc.

Ok its good to know I can spec into resto too and still do dpsing while throwing out heals and totems…this is exactly what I was hoping. I don’t mind throwing out heals when needed. I just don’t want to spec all the way for it
