As long as you have full mail armor and a mage to give you a water-IV, shamans can tank late 30s, early 40s instances just fine, cause the dungeons are tuned for warriors who probably only have a couple pieces of plate, mail armor is enough to tank them.
Shamans can tank endgame dungeons since they have the luxury of being able to be shielded by priests and not have that impede their threat generation. It’s less than optimal but can be done, although literally any other tank is preferable.
It is doable in everything but raids so yes
It’s ok to say Druids can MT. In fact they are optimal for Resist fights.
That guide is complete trash. The “comparison” just throws out numbers without actually showing any verification. What setup is going to allow a Shaman to hit 11k Health without any modifiers while also achieving more Armor than a Warrior at 15k because it certainly isn’t the Phase 6 “BiS” set listed.
Really, how is anyone supposed to take this “guide” seriously when the Phase 6 BiS leaves the Shaman at barely 6k unbuffed Health, and 7.2k unbuffed Armor. Where is the Shaman gaining another 5k Health to achieve the 11k listed later for comparison? Where is the Shaman going to gain 8k Armor? A Druid who mindlessly goes for Health alone beats both of these baselines by several thousand each and does so without buffs…
On top of all of this, the BiS Phase 6 set gives the Shaman 330 Defense. So the Shaman is going to get critically hit, just like a Druid, but with substantially less Health and Armor to survive it. The Shaman is also going to get crushing blows, just like a Druid, but again with substantially less Health and Armor to survive it.
ive seen a shaman tank WC decently well before
With a well-behaved group Shammies can tank up to around 40ish. Past SM it gets touchy, past level 50 don’t even bother. With the current playerbase you shouldn’t try to tank past SFK.
Shaman can function as low level tank… with a willing healer.
But once you get to SM, things start to hit harder, and shaman don’t have the tools.
- No, they can’t
- No, you didn’t
I have raided with people that are nutty enough to warrant men in white coats visiting their homes and in my 5+ years playing WoW (Vanilla-Cata) I never, ever came across a Shaman raidtank. Not an offtank. Not even an “oh crap let’s Shock that mob off the healer” tank.
And Hunters are laughable as tanks. Duo with your pet, sure. With a group that literally does nothing, sure. But in an actually competent group, even if they behave themselves, it won’t happen unless they gimp their own DPS.
Yeah I don’t get him, he jumps in to plug his “guide” on the Hunter Tank and Shaman Tank threads and then just disappears. I wonder if in another month or two he’ll repeat it…
We had a shaman tank multiple bosses in MC last week for fun. We were all excited to see how he would do, and it was fine.
Shaman’s shouldn’t be considered tanks by any means, but with an easy raid like MC on farm, its not impossible.
BTW- Ironically enough I saw Countdown to Classic mentioned early on in this thread. Our guild was created from the community around that podcast.
I leveled 0/23/28 as a Shaman and Tanked all the way up to the first half of BRD because tanks are so rare and there are way too many healers.
It is viable.
I gave up “tanking” around Mara/ST because of nature resists and BRD things just hit too hard.
And by “tanking” I mean just doing a whole lotta DPS and getting aggro and having friends heal me.
they take way to much damage to be real tanks.
Than you clearly have not been surrounded by good players. Because that’s the requirement to shaman tank. And in a very old game such as WoW very few things are hard enough to qualify a player to be good.
I’d bring up that you clearly have not played on a pserver but people here will claim it’s not a perfect replication of ClassicWoW even though it’s like 98% accurate and anyone else will says its an adequate comparison. I urge you to venture out of your bubble and talk with other communities about these off-meta specs, if you don’t believe me.
idk what those “real” tank mean. Shaman tanks can comfortably tank 1-2weeks after a raid has been cleared world first. Whether it be off-tank or main tank will depend on the guild and the shaman’s commitment.
Your p-server experience means nothing at all, the servers were inaccurate, allowed mechanics to stack that shouldn’t, couldn’t manage to accurately reflect stat caps or boss statistics, etc. Again you’re shying away from actually posting up a single verifiable statistic or calculation in favor of “trust me”
Being propped up by others is exactly the problem with gimped roles, because you hand those pros over to a Druid or Warrior MT, and everything goes more smoothly, more quickly, and more easily.
The ones that don’t rely upon p-server approximations and fabrications to prop up gimp specs.
i havent seen any real guilds in classic wow use any shaman tanks.why take a weak shaman tank over a warrior tank?
classic wow has the same bad meta that retail wow has.
For serious content, no. For fun times, sure. I’ve done high-level dungeons with a shaman tank leading a group of very high dps classes. If you’re burning down even boss mobs quickly and have a geared healer, shaman is fine.
I had a shaman tank scholomance for me yesterday.
It went very well. Smoother than many runs I’ve had with warrior tanks. Even got my shaman quest done without any issues. If you’re properly specced for it, and know how to control mobs, and control your pulls, you’ll be able to do it no problem I think.
It’s not a raid viable specc, but with a lack of tanks for dungeons, a Shaman tank isn’t too bad.
