Druid: LOL. Can you really tank?
Me: Yes.
Druid: I don’t believe that. I want to see it for myself. Let’s make a group.
A short time later we have a full group madeup of Myself, a Shaman healer, a hunter, the druid and a mage.
As I’m heading to WC I get another whisper from the druid informing me that the healer wants to replace me with a real tank(A warrior, naturally). I laugh it off and continue to the entrance.
Me: “Just give it a chance.”
After Mutanus was slain and the run had 0 deaths the party chat was filled with apologies directed in my direction for ever doubting the viability of a Shaman tank.
TLDR: Shamans can tank dungeons. Don’t doubt them come Classic.
shamans are actually better at tanking then pallies at lower levels, rockbiter weapon and earth shock (6 sec CD) are nice threat generators, pallies need to rely on holy damage ALOT! and can oom quite fast trying to keep aggro
Yeah shamans had some paltry psuedo tanking talents in the enhancement tree, who remembers the block chance talents? XD They typically fall to the way side pretty early on though, I vaguely recall seeing one helping offtank the core pups in MC once …that sorta counts.
its too bad they didn’t expand/improve on them being a hybrid class instead of fully dumbing it down to ‘range dps, melee dps, or healz’.
That may be true but when you’re comparing VANILLA to CLASSIC, private servers do not enter the discussion. Period.
Who cares what you can/can’t do on a private server when the code could technically be modified to make it impossible to get past level 1? Or allow you to kill Rag in one hit at level 1?
This is a bit misleading. People are clearing Cath on Classic at 30 because they are decent groups twinked out in level 30 BiS. I’m pretty sure that full level 30 BiS groups aren’t really a thing doing SM on pirate servers.
I think his point is just that pservers, which most have been trying to emulate classic faithfully, people have been doing it.
How well pservers were doing the job is another matter. The idea that pservers can do anything they want like not let you level past 1 or kill Rag one shot is laughable since Blizzard can do the same thing, and in fact do fun stuff like spawn bosses during beta.
I wouldn’t be getting worked up about pservers as far as them not counting solely because they’re pservers. The Nost servers were highly praised because they were working their butts off to make it authentic and that’s what actually matters.
I don’t have a problem with pservers. My problem is using them for reference.
Shaman threat building is extremely weak. After level 40 dungeon mobs and bosses are tuned for plate wearing tanks or bears (practically plate). Can a Shaman tank? If you’re desperate and you healers likes being oom constantly sure… if your group wants to move a snails pace waiting for a shaman to build enough threat sure.
There’s a lot of misconceptions about Shamans, I know, I played one.
Some people think Shamans were actually planned to be a tank. False. One of the original class designers said in an interview that Shamans were only meant to be effective (maybe) tanks till level 40-45ish. They hit the mark it seems because Shamans are suck tanks after that.
Some people actually believe the Shamans stoneclaw totem is a taunt. It’s not. The totem is an escape mechanism and awards the shaman no threat at all…0…
Early on, Shamans can earth shock and hit with rock biter and get some ok threat. After 40 you have to give them pretty significant threat building time, which slows progress and puts strain on the healer.
Yes they CAN semi-tank some high level instances, but it’s painful. You basically need to be desperate to get in the instance…
i play it some shaman tank in vanilla era and he tank all dire maul
and i play a tank warrior i feel a bit useless in this run , he ask me to tank the run and i agree , in the end of the run he tank Immol’thar and the book of Foror’s Compendium of Dragon Slaying drop, and i have the book
shaman tank are great
Nobody is debating that private servers are a thing and have been doing. My problem is that he is using it as a reference to how powerful/weak shamans are in two retail games (classic/vanilla).
How well pservers are doing what job? I think you’re confused. Blizzard CAN do the same thing, except there’s one key component you’re missing: They’re the developers of the game. As I said, when you’re comparing vanilla and classic, you can’t just add in “private servers”.
vanilla wow: developed and code maintenance/patches by blizzard
classic wow: developed and code maintenance/patches by blizzard
private servers: original source code developed by blizzard, then modified by non-blizzard programmers.
Not worked up over pservers. Just pointing out that you can’t compare private servers to retail servers. Apples to Oranges.
And, btw. I see what you did there… but Nost servers aren’t the ONLY private servers for wow. Can’t paint a broad brush of “private servers” = Nost.
