I think that there’s an incredibly huge potential for the glyph system now that DragonFlight is giving us so much choice and customization. Glyphs and tomes and such that have already existed and some that might be very easy to implement could be a huge, HUGE deal for people who want to really customize their characters into specific looks that we haven’t been able to do up until now.
This is not actually limited to Shaman, but I’ve been having a lot of fun as my locked-at-lv59-because-I-don’t-have-Dragonflight-but-I-want-to-experience-the-rest-of-the-game-without-being-overpowered Panda Enhancement Shaman, so I thought I’d just drop some ideas in here in case anything stands out.
I also wanna say first that I adore the options that we have now; I have a really fun and survivable soloing build that’s so far pretty viable and fun for just doing regular questing and it doesn’t use lava lash at all, instead just buffing the crap out of lightning and wind and healing. Allowing for us to make weird builds and seeing how viable or weird they can get is 100% great. Thank you for bringing this back, it’s literally what brought me back to the game after leaving when Cata started. Weird customizations and meaningful choices for the first time in what feels like forever. THANK YOU
THAT SAID, I’d like to see this trend of customization and personalization that’s been happening in DF to continue, so… here’s some ideas on Glyphs! I won’t give names, just functionality I’d love to see
Potential Shaman Glyphs!
- Glyphs for changing elementals into ones from specific regions or expansions! Pandaria elementals for a panda shaman, for example, would be amazing. They can be of the same size generally, and could be affected by size-changing glyphs too, if that’s feasible in the code. Sort of like how Shadowfiend could be a Sha or a Voidling, or all the frost elemental forms for Mage.
- Glyphs for changing Ghost Wolf form! It’s really cool that Trolls have raptor form now, and that we have lupine and vulpine forms, but I’d like to see some others from different regions. Maybe a white-tiger-esque form? Or a corehound-esque spirit form for dark irons? Something weird for goblins maybe, honestly I’m not sure what would be thematic for a goblin there, but there’s definitely a multitude of options around.
- De-coupling “Spirit” form coloration from Ghost Wolf glyph’d form, and having separate glyphs for color and shape. Currently, you can have Ghost Wolf, or you can glyph it into Spirit Wolf for that glow. But, if you pick any other forms, they’re all Spirit colored only. Why not have Ghost coloration for the other forms?
- A simple fix to Spirit Vulpine animations. Lupine can sit and eat and interact with things, so I can’t imagine it’d be that hard to translate that animation suite over to the Vulpine model as a minimum effort change. Even if it’s a little wonky looking from the models not being exactly 1:1, having the option to sit would be a big plus imho.
- Feral Spirit form glyphs! We now have Raptors if we want, but why not also have lupines and vulpines? Why not have small spirit duplicates of yourself, in a panda’s case, for example (though this might encroach on Monk abilities a bit too much, it would also be a cool addition for Shaman not associated with wolves or raptors as much, like Kul Tirans/Pandas/Goblins/Vulpera…) Summoning Spirit Tigers or Spirit Dogs, or something Drustvar-esque for Kul Tirans maybe? Spirit alpaca??? I think this, like Ghost Wolf, has a lot of very easy wins that could be implemented.
- Color or Effect flavors for some abilities that work within the themes of where different races get their Shaman traditions! For example, Kul Tiran Stormsages kinda feel weird sometimes being so lava-based, when they seem mostly water/wind/lightning/ice/spirits powered in the actual story. I think that it’s completely feasible to have Lava Lash, Lava Burst, and Flame Shock be glyphable to look more lightning/wind/water/spirit-based. Maybe Flame Shock could have an electrified effect instead of the fire burst effect? Maybe something more like a burst of superheated steam? Superheated water could also work for Lava Burst, in that case. Similarly, lightning based attacks could be colorized Jade for panda, or work like the colorations of monk kicks.
- Some other Minor ideas. Bringing back older looks to things, and updating older models to newer ones that already exist (with a filtered texture or something similar, of course, in case of spirits and such), doesn’t feel like it’d be the hardest thing to implement, not counting QA time. I think that super low effort, high impact Glyphs being added in batches could be a huge, HUGE deal for people like me that really like the world itself on top of the game. Like, glyphs for old enchant looks, like the little rock floating around your weapon, or having 3 lightning balls on lightning shield. Having these as glyphs or tomes could be really fun (and thank you for doing this with Water Shield! I know it does nothing but that little bubble gives me such joy <3 )
Again, I LOVE that you’ve been giving everyone so much more customization options. White and grey transmogs was such a huge low-effort high-impact change, like, when I read that this was happening I literally yelled (positively) about it to everyone else in the room at the time.
As a QA and QE professional who’s seen a lot of how companies work in the Games industry, THANK YOU for listening to feedback and giving people customization options in your role-playing game. Listen to your players, listen to your dev teams, listen to your QA when they have quality-of-life ideas. With FFXIV’s and GW2’s customizability, and now this, I’m hoping this trend continues to improve the ability for everyone playing the game to be exactly the kind of character they wanna be.
