Shaman - Enhancement / Elemental talents

Since we still don’t have class forums for Classic, I’m posting here.

While leveling I have been using an Enhancement build, and am going into Elemental as a secondary tree now. I have read some talent guides, in particular Aryxymaraki’s excellent old guide from vanilla days (which you can see at https://web.archive.org/web/20060718121746/http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.aspx?fn=wow-shaman&t=36840&p=1&tmp=1#post36840.)

But good as these guides are, most of their talent evaluations assume the reader’s primary focus is on the tree containing that talent. Since I am taking Elemental secondary to Enhancement, I would like to know how Elemental talents best complement Enhancement.

Enhancement
I have 31 points in Enhancement:

I took what I consider to be the essentials, and not taking any of the damage-reduction talents, which, from everything I have been told, aren’t actually that useful. I am interested in putting 2 more points into Enhancing Totems; in parties I find I use both Strength of Earth and Grace of Air totems a lot if there’s any other melee, and I also use them solo.

Elemental
For elemental I already have 5 points in Convection to help with mana burn (I go empty so fast!). My next choice is maxing Concussion or putting 3 points into Call of Flame. I’m inclined to go with Concussion. (Skipping Earth’s Grasp and Elemental Warding.)

In tier 3 I expect to take Elemental Focus and Reverberation. I’m not a fan of proc-based abilities, but anything to help with mana burn is welcome. Reverberation is more my kinda thing, a reliable reduction in cooldown on my shocks (leading to more mana burn, I know  ).

To cap off Elemental I could pick any of Improved Fire Totems, or—assuming I don’t take Enhancing Totems—maxed Eye of the Storm or Elemental Devastation.

Improved Fire Totems seems nice, especially for dealing with packs. I’ve definitely discovered there’s no point using either Fire Nova or Magma Totem unless I’ve got a good amount of aggro on every mob around me first. I’m not inclined to put points there and find out the talent doesn’t actually help, however.

Eye of the Storm seems to be more for Elemental-primary builds: I don’t expect to be casting Lightning Bolt while meleeing, because I will always be getting pounded on—but on the other hand, sometimes I need to get off a clutch heal while being pounded on.

Aryxymaraki criticized Elemental Devastation as being essentially MAD (to borrow a term from D&D): an Elemental shaman is primarily a caster, not a melee fighter, and this talent kind of requires you be both. However, as an Enhancement-primary shaman, I still cast shocks, and I often pull with a lightning bolt. So it seems this could be a good fit for my combat style, even though it depends on procs. (I’ve also been told I can spam a rank 1 shock for low mana burn just to fish for procs on my melee swings, and Reverberation synergizes well with that approach, too.)

Don’t skip earths graspppppo

Why? 10 chars

The extra health on stoneclaw totem is amazing when you accidentally pull or are just fighting multiple mobs in general, and the extra range on earthbind is amazing in pvp and also pve/dungeons when you have runners. Not to mention earthbind kiting is a lot easier with that extra range

I agree with trolled. Talents are best done based on which content youll focus on end game. Enhancement ive found is more of a pve than pvp. But you can end other players if the right proc hit. Ultimately, enhance/ele builds in my opinion are funniest way tonplay shammies.

My personal way to go is to spec enhance until level 40 then respec to the ele rest 31/0/20 for end game. Gives me fast single target kill speed as ele and i can heal any dungeon till 60 easily with int/spirit/healing gear

Thanks for the details. Funny, I’ve been using rank 1 Frost Shock on runners (usually there’s just one). I’ve definitely been chased down and killed multiple times in spite of dropping those two totems, so I will give this talent new consideration!

R1 Frost is solid as well, earthbind can just get more than one of them if necessary and then you still have a max rank shock available for damage on another mob if necessary. But no problem, go shamans!

But if I do that so early, what am I supposed to do with all that Scarlet Monastery chain armor and El Ravager?

I do actually plan to respec at least twice more, to try out full Elemental and full Restoration builds, and see how they play. Getting the gear to support them, though, that’s a whole deal. In the meantime, I am going to 60 and into raiding as Enhancement since that’s where I’ve already put some heavy investment.

If you have a real good set for enhance feel free to ride it out for a few more levels until you can gather some greens/blues for ele/resto. Definitely not a bad idea.

Just go 5/31/14.

It’ll carry you through forever.
