Shadowmelding in combat in vanilla

So, I played a disc/holy night elf priest in Vanilla. I vividly remember using Shadowmeld in raids saving us from complete wipes. Example: We’re doing a boss fight in Molten Core… people start dying left and right. I fade and lost most aggro. I become the last man standing and the boss is coming my way… I then shadowmeld and go out of combat. The boss resets and I can start ressing the dead. I see patch notes saying this wasn’t done until wotlk, but I have vivid memories of doing this in vanilla. I also have a few friends who remember doing this in raids before any expansion as well. So, am I remember things from a paralleled universe or…? Some feedback would be appreciated.

Probably a parallel universe

This was not a thing in Vanilla. You had to be out of combat to use it. I’m not sure where people remember this from, but I maintanked on a Night Elf Warrior in Vanilla and the only time I ever used it was to open in PvP. There was many times I wished I would be able to use it in combat.

Either you and your friends are remembering a private server, or you’ve gotten confused about what was when.

No judgment either way, but the answer is: You cannot shadowmeld in combat.

If your heal target died I’m guessing there may have been a window where you may have gone out of combat?

This may be, I was usually main tank healer.

i dont remember clear enough to give a definitive answer.

the not being able to in combat though is probably right though.

i think (might be wrong) you can do that in tbc but you cant also eat/drink while combat melded, till wotlk, and then they take that away cause its too powerful in pvp/arena, etc. but you can still meld in combat. you cant meld in combat in vanilla.

summary:

Vanilla - no combat meld
TBC - yes combat meld
Wrath - yes combat meld and also brief time where you could also eat/drink while melded

I’m pretty sure you were able to early vanilla and maybe late as well stay out of combat if you were not to close to boss. Then when someone dies you rez them heal them up then they go back in.

thanrar

this sounds right but wouldnt that also entail not healing, dotting or dpsing beforehand?

One cannot meld while in combat in vanilla.

One can meld while eating/drinking in vanilla.

in wotlk i believe it was, you could meld in combat and eat/drink. that proved to be too good. there was videos of arena matches where a nelf healer would meld, eat/drink, regain hp and mana as a result, and resume the match lol meanwhile her opponents know what she’s doing and run to search the last area she was seen so they can stop it.

I believe in SUPER early Vanilla I think I remember us having some healers stand waaaay back from the boss fights because if you were far away enough you wouldnt get combat flagged. This allowed the healers out of combat to rez people who died within their range literally during the encounter.

This may be somewhat of a hybrid of what you remember. Melding because you werent in combat. But this was patched out pretty early in vanilla I believe and the raids began to trigger combat for every regardless of distance soon after.

I’m looking at my original, tattered game guide and it says it can’t be used in combat. It also says it has no cooldown.

In the 1.12 pserver I play on, you cannot Shadowmeld in combat.

they added a raid wide pulse that put people in combat when a boss was engaged (not sure about trash) .

i remember healing and we used the ooc rezzing on baron gheddon.

I particularly enjoyed the instant flight form glyph for Druid, from Shadowmeld during BC. Gank people in Halaa, get surrounded by enemy players, Shadowmeld, turn into bird, peace.

You cannot do it in combat. Those people you see in arena videos drinking and melding are going long enough to get out of combat and smash the buttons as fast as possible.

I played NE hunter during vanilla to raid. I was MADE to be an engineer so I had some jumper cables and when we were gonna wipe I was told to hit the edge of the room and FD/meld so as to jumper a healer afterwards.

I have never had any recollection of shadowmeld EVER being able to be actually used in combat during the last 14 years of wow.
