I saw a lot of speculation that Shadowlands would launch in Augest with the prepatch coming out in July. July has come and gone and we still have no word on the prepatch launch date but Shadowlands is still set to release in 2020. Anyone have any speculation as to the prepatch release date?

Pre-patch hasn’t hit the PTR yet. I expect it might hit PTR sometime in September, at which point it really depends on how long it takes for bug testing and tuning changes. But I’d say, at the very least you’re looking at a month for testing at a mimimum, meaning an October pre-patch date is likely.
Fall 2020 is all we know. The latest date we could get it is December 21st.
Don’t get your hopes up for an early fall release though. Shadowlands still needs a lot of work.

The default release date of an expansion as always been before the holidays break in December.
But the preferred release date of Blizzard is to launch an expansion at the same time or just before a competitor release a new game.
This year, due to back to school with Covid which will take up a lot of space in the news, August and September are meh. I have not researched released date of other games because i don’t really care.
I wish i could keep my corruptions and essences for a longer period since i am having a blast!

How could people speculate that the pre patch would come out the same time beta went out?

Prepatch has always been 2 weeks prior to launch. Dont expect it until late October or sometime in November.
However, it would be nice for Blizzard to be more transparent with the launch date as we are 3/4 months out from mid to end of fall Nov/Dec. I’m sure thousands of players would like to schedule work vacations accordingly. Typically this requires a good bit advanced notice, especially during the holiday season to lock up dates.

PTR was just updated to 9.0.1, so Pre-Patch is probably going to be mid-to-late September or Early October, and Shadowlands will likely release in November.

If they don’t release shadowlands by October then the expansion will be DoA. This is one of the most competitive holiday seasons ever.
Unless cyberpunk gets delayed again.

Prepatch is already on PTR, since that happened I’d imagine this time next month we’ll be playing on the prepatch. I’d be surprised if they left prepatch on the ptr for 2 months and waited all the way until October. I’d also be surprised to see Shadowlands release in October though. So who knows.

I honestly will be surprised if Shadowlands launches successfully this year because of the Covid situation putting a severe crunch on game developers. It’ll be extra stressful + hard for them to pump out content in 2021 so there can be a long content drought.
I’d honestly be surprised more if the bean counters LET it be delayed.

It won’t be delayed. 
They’ve already said Q4/Fall multiple times and if it wasn’t going to be released on time the Pre-patch wouldn’t be on the PTR earlier than most people expected. I think they are looking to move the release up not back so I’m guessing we get an announcement this with Pre-patch/Release dates.
