Shadowlands In Canon

When my character speaks of the Shadowlands, she often mentions it as being an experience unique to each soul. Also, it is a very personal experience for those that do. Hence, do you think Sadgati has every right to be HIGHLY SKEPTICAL when Shadowlands is mentioned by world leaders as a shared experience to defeat the jailer?

I mean, Iā€™d be very interested to see if Blizzard is pitching Shadowlands absorbed thousands of Azerothā€™s greatest champions, or it only absorbed a few score to a few hundred for the ā€˜two yearsā€™ we were fighting ā€¦

but Iā€™m also seeing them going out of their way to ignore that it ever happened because of how the player-base reacted to the entire story and the ā€˜Big Badā€™ of the setting.

I do think, ultimately, that we ended up going to the Shadowlands with multiple other adventurers, but I donā€™t think it was thousands of Azerothā€™s Murder Hobos Florida People Honster Mumpers Bath Salts Aficionados ā€˜Heroesā€™ ended up stranded in the Shadowlands together for two years, or thereā€™d be some very strenuous child support demands coming at us from beyond the veil a lot more things going wrong while we were gone.

I do think there was also multiple Maw Walkers, its just that the Player Character is portrayed as the ā€˜first oneā€™, and the only non-DK who went into the portal atop Icecrown Citadel, with every other character showing up after we open a direct portal between Orgrimmar/Stormwind City and Oribos.

What is this Shadowlands you speak of?

Yep, I have decided this is pretty much my response as well. Itā€™s something that Kina will never willingly speak of and tries not to think about.

Yes, yes I do. While at some level Kina will acknowledge that something happened. Like you, sheā€™s leaning into the ā€œuniquenessā€ of the experience for each being. And it should be left at that. She thinks people who openly talk about it are a bit deranged.

In universe, Vanndrel was off establishing his tobacco farm in Kul Tiras during the Shadowland years. If you start raving about the afterlife and some robot construct with mammalian nipples, heā€™s going to smile politely while backing away rapidly.

I never really bothered to consider much how Shadowlands may have factored into anything, if only because it lacks any relevance to all but one, perhaps two, of my characters.

Regarding how right it may be to be highly skeptical of the world leadersā€™ shared experience in itā€¦given the context, namely this particular characterā€™s view of the realm, I suppose it makes sense for them to hold such a disposition, though Iā€™m not sure Iā€™d say she has every right to it; primarily due to several factors that would add credence to the claim, such as the precursor Scourge fiasco, the sudden disappearance of various notable figures, some of which were pretty much publicly abducted by otherworldly creatures if memory serves, and public evidence of the rift at Icecrown for those who mightā€™ve been there during the aforementioned Scourge chaos.

I imagine it would be generally difficult to fathom large groups of mortal men and women going to what is essentially THE afterlife like it was any other landmass, particularly when lacking personal experience, but depending on oneā€™s connections thereā€™s likely enough evidence legitimize it to someone outside of the experience.

In short, I suppose it really depends on Sadgatiā€™s resources, how much she personally saw and who she knows and/or is willing to listen to.

You have every right to do whatever you wanna do while roleplaying.

It is more along the lines of who she knows, her class (warlock), social status, theological beliefs, and the fact she was in Nagrand for 18 years per kingā€™s calendar (read: I was out of game for 12 years IRL). Being a warlock, she can and does sense souls departed and incoming around her. After fading to black recently, she started to sense many souls entering the realm around her. She is suspect of what that ā€˜mightā€™ mean. There will be a DND role on her next turn in life. Nonetheless, if, and that is a BIG if there were many having a shared experience in the Shadowlands and SOMEHOW returned to tell the tale, her greatest fear is that of taking judgement into the hands of man from the arbiters - REALLY REALLY BAD as in DONā€™T DO IT!!

Honestly though, I think the biggest implication for the Shadowlands in canon was how little impact it actually had in the canon.

Sort of like Warlords of Draenor, actually. We kinda just went from Mists of Pandaria into Legion and Battle for Azeroth saw us pick up right where we left off with the Nā€™Zoth raid dealing with Xalaā€™tath in The War Within.

The only meaningful impact is in regards to Anduin getting super upset he was forced to be a skin for Arthas and he stabbed that one Robot (Which was more of a W for the forces of the Primus given how she was deliberately hampering efforts to unify to take on the Jailer in the first place). Which is me speaking diminishingly of something deliberately designed to be mocked like the McDonalds Coffee situation.

No seriously. View Anduin through the lens of one of the Blizzard Employees that was abused in the wake of the scandal. Now look at his behavior and how ā€œit wasnā€™t that big of a dealā€.

I think thatā€™s a reason TWW continues to be a kind of ā€œehā€ expansion for me because Anduinā€™s over here being a proxy for all Blizzardā€™s victims and behaving in such a way as to make us brush him off as overreacting melodrama.

Because I caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan.

At this point, Iā€™m basically in a game of gay chicken with God. Being hit with cars, bricks, knives, star pickets, glass bottles, a fork lift and now double lung cancer, and Iā€™m still standing.

Either heā€™s got to up his game, or bite the pillow.

One of the small upsides of Battle for Azeroth was that it was safe to conclude that thereā€™d be a considerable amount of turmoil following its finish, thus providing tons of stuff that my characters could be doing instead of having their brains liquefied by the Super Devil.

ā€¦

Now that Iā€™ve had my coffee and am fully awake, I guess it falls to me to make this a reality then.

we all have heard IC =/= OOC but folks gotta remember OOC =/= IC an d by that i mean, what you the player knows doesnā€™t mean your character has to know it too. your character can also just be a stubborn ā€œfoolā€ and refuse to believe anything about shadowlands.

Are they technically incorrect, sure yah but thatā€™s why you start bar fights in the tail for.

as someone who generally keeps to canon, characters not loyal to Bolvar Fordragon would not have been important enough to have seen the Shadowlands for themselves. therefore iā€™m comfortable having most of my characters know nothing about it, and my death knights just kinda side-eye people that ask about it.

My characters were too busy fearfully bunkering down and keeping their distance from the Horde for years to know anything, all they heard was rumors about the sky above Northrend shattering and that was about it.

Thatā€™s been how I deal with it. Yes, Shadowlands for better or worse is canon. With that said, none of my characters know a single thing about it. Iā€™m genuinely happy for the people that enjoy the expansion, but it just wasnā€™t for me.

Same here.

Vanndrelā€™s been enjoying rebuilding a life for himself in a new homeland and then Lady Proudmoore started calling for volunteers becauseā€¦DALARAN DID WHAT?!

Juspion actually knows everything about the Shadowlands but this is also the guy that peered into void and now talks about things like a giant metal hand that floats around him controlling his actions or the time he traveled to an alternate dimension where people mix their trash with their recycling. If your character actually listens and believes anything this guy says, I think we got a bigger problem.

I mean, TL:DR, Iā€™ve written it as Gen and the rest of the Motley Crew all jumped in after the portals from Orgrimmar and Stormwind were opened, but it was still a handful of adventurers from each side who were going through because they either wanted Sylvanas-on-a-Stick, or because our boys, Anduin and Baine, got yoinked, and we werenā€™t going to stand for that nonsense.

Only, like, two were Maw-Walkers, and the rest were stuck without those two, and the whole situation was surreal and overwhelming for most of the adventure because weā€™re not in the Realm of the Living anymore, and that has consequences for living beings running around for a little under two years in a place meant only for the deadā€¦
