In shadowlands they introduced a concept of fractals that the six known magic types concealing a seventh that peaks through the gaps. My theory the seventh fractal is actually spirit. While the brokers think it falls under the life tree of magic i think it is just the life has the most cracks to let small amounts of it through. All beings in the warcraft universe seem to have connections to it. Elementals are made when particles of what ever element it is primarily made of mixed with spirit.
The reason it was mostly sealed away an filtered through the other magic types is because if left unfiltered it could lead to creations like murmur a being that could be called a sound elemental
I would be much more interested in these sci-fantasy concepts if they didn’t have to retcon the entire magic system as it was known from WC1 to Legion in order to implement it.
Seriously, fractals? That kinda weird fantasy stuff is right up my alley. But I just can’t take it seriously, especially after Danuser left and left all this new lore up in the air.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this never comes up again. I guess it’s a bit of a coin flip.
Fractals is activating my GW2 sleeper agent phrase.
Elementals are mixed with Spirit you say? Because Chronicle says that less Spirit = more Elementals and more Spirit = more Nature/Plants.
Ardenweald is Death + Nature/Spirit.
Maldraxxus is Death + Decay.
Bastion is Death + Arcane.
Revendreth is Death + Shadow(I do not mean Void)
The Maw is Death.
Brokers and Devourers don’t count as Death. Brokers are Order Entities like their Ethereal cousins.
Order’s spectrum is:
Purple Arcane Order(the usual form of Order), Golden Arcane Order(seen on the Dragon Isles), Holy Arcane(the sort seen used by Titanic Watchers all over the Dragon Isles), Arcane Order Lightning(used by Titanic Watcher Irideus in the Halls of Infusion), Hyperlight(Broker Order Magic) and the Starry Arcane Order Magic(used by the Constellars and Titans).
Order is mostly Arcane except in the few circumstances where it is Holy Magic.
Light has the Holy Light and the Arcane Holy Sacred Flame.
Unless lore was changed since i last looked arcane, fire, water, earth, wind, and other elementals are made of their element plus spirit. Abundance of spirit on a planet makes elementals docile. If there’s a small amount of spirit the elementals are aggressive and hard to achieve balance.
Planets with world souls tend to not have much free spirit energy because it is locked up in the world soul. Some worlds like drenor have to much spirit and become unbalanced leading to one force overtakeing the others. In the case with drenor nature grew over aboundent almost leading to the collapse of the ecosystem.
blizz cant even decide how many elements there are do we need fractals
According to a Hallowfall Book:
Put simply, the cosmos appears as a hexateron. Imagine a four-sided tetrahedron internally extruded to form a multidimensional solid with twenty planes of existence, fifteen transitory pathways, and six vertices where interferon patterns create monopolar expressions of cosmic forces.
Singular energy types are unstable according to Ogdaen’s law, and thus they bind to one or more secondary elements. The Firelands contains as much magma as it does flame, and why the holy radiance of the Sacred Flame acts as an eternal beacon.
20 Planes of Existence with 15 Planes serving as transitory pathways and six vertices where the Fractal Patterns create Monopolar Expressions of Cosmic Forces.
I’m so tired of this poorly written, color-coded hard-magic system sucking all the mysticism out of this high fantasy setting. I swear Chronicles was written by people who hate the Warcraft setting and wish it were their own creative writing playground.
You mean Chris Metzen, Matt Burns and Robert Brooks? Who are listed as the main 3 authors of the original Chronicles trilogy?
Interesting theory… There is so very few information about this 7th Cosmic Force, but it makes me wonder if the actual WoW universe and its “preserve” timeline by the efforts of the First Ones with the Universe and the Titans with the “timeline” are one of thousands of past failures kinda like how “invoker” in Dota: “Dragon Blood” revealed how many times he re-created the Universe with the Pillars of the World Dragon Souls. (it was 12,403 times if your wondering).
And if this 7th Cosmic Force whatever it is be it spirit or something else must be (I speculate) the reason of its destruction and maybe why everything at its core of creation is so Mechanical, The First Ones being the survivors of previous WoW universes consumed by this Force… hmmm, maybe these Feral Devourers eating at Shadowland could be the 7th slipping through the crack… or just what part of whatever the “thing” Jaina mention in the Raid that “felt like it was trying to break free of the Maw”.
Either way if the 7th Cosmic Force is at some point flesh out I would not be surprise if Sire D and his Dreadlords are aware, allied or are even extensions of its Will, like we are the Champions of Azeroth they could be the “Champions” to herald the coming of this 7th Cosmic Force? Ah to many way this could turn out… sorry I geek out with silly speculations…lol
TL;DR: The theory sounds cool, so I guess in time we will have to see if they ever bring more lore on this mysterious 7th Cosmic Force.
Yeah. I prefer the older lore and magic system. I don’t have to agree with every decision the writers make.
I am highly skeptical that Metzen has any interest in going down the fractal rabbit hole that Danuser was setting up. The elemental essence of spirit does not animate the elements, if anything it soothes them. We have a bit of a warped perspective because Azeroth is the most atypical world in the cosmos, but on normal healthy worlds in the Great Dark Beyond that one of the cosmic forces has not meddled with elementals would likely never be a thing. The elemental forces would be in balance, and so they would never physically manifest but instead would slumber as part of the landscape.
I would still say that elementals would still have a physical form, just that they would be pure elementals like we see in AU Draenor. No mixed elementals like molten giants, mud elementals etc.
