Shadowlands Feels Bad

To be more specific, the leveling and zones feel incredibly bad.

So to start the expansion it felt like it took about an hour and a half of RP sessions of just the most absolutely awful lore this game has to offer. Who would’ve guessed spoiler you’re the chosen one. You’re now the commander of the Horde, insert class order hall title, slayer of many gods, savior of Azeroth, and now the Maw Walker which basically means… chosen one.

So I know for sometime now we’ve been absolutely the most important character in the lore but Shadowlands has also taken it even further this time. Canonically we’re the only ones from the actual World of Warcraft to be able to travel into this dimension. Aside from our supposed new bestfriends now, the Alliance and Horde race leaders + Ebon Blade. It’s just you! and some NPCs!

So now that I’ve established how Blizzard really wants to not feel like an MMO but more of a single player story, I want to say maybe this could’ve worked if Blizzard actually committed to the story but this is when it begins to make no sense whatsoever. So we escape the Maw and we leave all of our bestfriends behind in the Maw to be tortured and broken. We meet this new race of people that have agreed to help us as its mutually beneficial to us all. We’ve been tasked to discover the reasoning behind Kyrians being in the Maw helping the new big bad guy.

I arrive to wherever the Kyrians are, on a mission to get to the bottom of this mystery and liberate my new bestfriends from the Jailors dominion. Except… I have to do these trials? I’m kinda in a rush, my friends could be dying. This is important and affects this Kyrian race too. Oh I have to pass these trials. Clean your forge perhaps? Lets go for a few strolls while you tell me about your people I don’t know or care to know. You need help indoctrinating souls to your order? My friends can wait…

The story is absolutely horrid. I just explained where I am and what I am doing but I have absolutely no idea why I am doing any of this. It makes no sense. So back to my original point why this feels so bad. You want to force a heavily linear leveling experience onto us, that’s fine! I use to love the Warcraft lore. So new lore isn’t a bad thing. And I do appreciate them cutscenes and cinematics. So don’t tell me “Well you don’t like RPGs and this is an mmoRPG reeeeee.” No, this is quite simply put. BAD.

Over the past few expansions WoW has been taking that first “W” out of WoW. Does Shadowlands feel like a lived in world? Absolutely not. It’s a poor single player experience.

And thank God for my new best friends that are chicks! It seems like all these dudes are incredibly incompetent. I’ve noticed for awhile the guys on Azeroth have been so weak and in need of saving constantly but luckily I just have to turn to my ladies to pull us out of a tough spot. But foreal, it’s a good thing women in Azeroth or other WoW dimensions aren’t damsels in distress and can be strong leaders but this is becoming extremely predicable and boring. Is it so hard to mix it up? Why you gotta make Thrall so weak now. He was my favorite ):

Thankfully class design seems a lot better and has a lot more depth. I know this can vary for people but I am overall happy with what the Enhancement Shamans. We got our totems back!! Now I just have to force myself to level through this awful stories. I am aware that WoW is mostly defined by endgame and I’ve heard shadowlands has a pretty decent one. I’m excited.

TL/DR:
Negatives: The new WoW story/zone/leveling philosophy is awful. Men=Dumb
Women=Not Dumb.
Positives: Class Design. Art team. Endgame looks promising.

The fact you like Enhancement changes undermines the rest of your post.

Shadowlands is a breathe of fresh air, in a new location.

I actually agree with the OP. The quests now are just so mind numbing boring and pathetic. There is zero challenge, the map highlights everything to the point where I am not really sure why they don’t just teleport you from quest giver to quest giver (well, they do that on some quests actually). There is no fear of death doing a quest, no challenge of carefully pulling things. I get it, this isn’t classic, so why not just sell 60 boosts from day 1?

I kind of agree with the Maw sentiment. I didn’t get much further in Bastion before I called it a night out of boredom, so I’ll withhold judgment until I get further.

The maw takes close to 2 hours, was reading quest text and had to wait for some spawns, but there’s no sense of danger. You always have a companion who can taunt, and does more damage then you. So unless you pull a bunch of mobs there’s 0 threat. Even at the end when the Jailer is sending multiple waves at you all of the mobs immediately target the leaders instead of you.

Was kind of hoping for more. The Legion on the Broken Shore felt a 100 times more threatening then the Jailer on his home turf.

Remember after the dark portal opened on TBC? You didn’t just phone in leveling from 60 to 62…you were met with elite demons right out of the gate and if you got careless, a giant fel reaver would stomp you to bits.

What happened to the game?

No, they actually don’t. Everything feels so good and smooth. The best launch up to this day. The zones are breath-taking and the quests are epic. Did you stop to listen to the music while Ysera was being escorted?

That is exactly how I’d describe it.

The Maw didn’t take me nearly 2 hours, but it felt dull & boring & danger-free because of the powerful NPCs fighting with me. I’m hoping that the rest of the expac starts feeling more interesting, but so far it’s kinda meh.

I’m sorry you find my post insulting. My chair use to be smelling bad but it’s hard to get me into this expansion.

I am totally with you, I would of appreciated it if the intro story was like this “there is no champions here in the shadowlands, you mist hold your own among infinite souls.”

I do think blizzard is afraid of any strong men characters, margrave krexus looked so cool and they instantly killed him…and now draka is in charge which is fine but what the hell why did you make this unique character model to just kill him

I also like the idea of picking your own story and having to take longer to level if it could pace out the story more smoothly. Everything feels so rushed.

100%, I was so bored in the Maw I actually started trying to fail the quests to see if it was even possible, and no, you can just AFK most of it and the NPCs will do all the work. Meanwhile the NPCs are acting as if you are constantly at the edge of defeat when it is the exact opposite.

It got better after the Maw… but man I was so close to just logging out at that point it was really bad.

Yeah…people should have given feedback on beta/alpha. Suddenly it turns out this was a big issue and now everyone is talking about this.

This is what happens, when you listen to STREAMERS. Streamers have no clue on story progression or how a gamer feels.

If Blizzard for once ignored the Streamers and actually listened to paying customers , thinks would have be different.
