That was the problem, Once you announced this Exp, used ICC, showed Charry mc’ Char’king getting dethroned, Arthas tossed into the maw EVERYTHING leading up to shadow lands lead to Arthas in some shape or form.
NO ONE cared about the jailer because no one KNEW about the jailer, or what he really wanted, or how he was just “misunderstood good guy” trying to unite everyone for the greater good against the bigger evil.
Heck Mueh’zala would have made more sense as the big bad then the Jailer did: I love the radio silence from blizzard to, like fingers in the ears “LALALALALALAL WE CANT HEAR YOU THIS WAS PERFECT!” approach they are taken.
But no: You wasted Arthas, You wasted Mueh’zala you focused hard onto Sylvanas which no one asked for and then you made this…jailer thing which no one connected to on a villain level and just said “accept it”.
You should have never shown Arthas in the first place if you really wanted to avoid the fan base back lash: Just, never have shown him and leave it a mystery, You also should have built up the Jailer more and honestly if you wanted him to be some pen ultimate bad guy not even fight him, like have him leave some Uber powerful Minion behind and he farts off into the cosmos to be used later when you have time to build him up more.
Yes this is thread # 9893839009829028 on this but wow I really can’t believe the writers of this lore is so, so so so so so so so bad. The fan base deserves an apology like whole heartily “our bad guys, we really did drop the pooch but we listened and will be better” apology: if the Devs can pretty much “own up and listen” to the fan base and community, the writers should be held that that same standard.
Arthas was just a little wisp, he poofed into fairy dust. Meanwhile the jailor is a big mean robot. I think that’s what I learned of the story in SL so far.
Vol’jin died in Legion expansion at the Broken Shore. He came back in SLas a spirit to join the Winter Queen’s night fae army… I know this because I did all of the night fae campaign quests.
He will be reborn AS THE PUMPKIN KING! yes if you spend all day there are alot of lore NPCS forgotten in shadow lands: I was talking from a main Villain stand point of the direction they went with.
But yes, Shadowlands should have been a Easter egg exp filled with amazing npcs flushed out/given more to do and built upon aside as someone else said: Jailer big mean robot: forgot to add sad, He is a big mean SAD robot.
I told my brother he was mats to enchant a weapon that later gets disenchanted. Very disappointing.
Yeah, he really did end up being a Thanos knock off.
I remember thinking, before the expansion came out, that maybe Mueh’zala would end up being the “jailor” figure…the cast out brother of Aman’thul cast into the underworld as punishment…sort of a Zeus Hades type relationship…nope.
Didn’t he take Rezan’s place as the Loa of Kings or some such?
This ending seems like a best-of-a-bad-situation compromise to acknowledge him without attempting to write a new chapter to his story that was being loudly pre-rejected and rallied against by portions of the community who didn’t want Arthas’ story reopened.
I wholeheartedly disagree. I think they used him just the right amount. Shadowlands was never going to be an Arthas sequel. It was never suggested to be. The Arthas Stans just got it in their heads that he was sure to make some glorious return at some point. But like, why would he? His story was over. It ended over a decade ago. What more could they add to it at this point? Yes we saw him in the Uther Afterlives video. But that was set up Uther’s story. Likewise, his final appearance after the Anduin fight. That was Sylvanas’s story. Once she had closure on what he did to her, and what it led to her doing, his part in it was done.
They never suggested it was going to be? Never said it sure, but suggested? I do beg to differ.

You smell this amazing cake cooking (Sly whole driving force was what arthas did to her, Uther clearly hurt by what arthas did to him/he did to arthas)
You watch me put the frosting on this cake (the ex love/fling Jaina still hurt over arthas, talking to uther about this pain etc)
I put this cake in a box and walk over to you (Showing images of Frostmourne being made, The helm of dom, Ner’zul in a raid)
Oh you want that cake, that cake is just perfect, you came in, saw it being made, smelled it…But I never said I was giving you cake? and I toss it on the garbage infront of your face and stomp on it.
So yes…Arthas was never said he would be part of it…But like that cake i stomped out in front of you, are you not disappointed? I just wasted that cake: It could have been yours, but no, I just threw it away.
That was all Uther’s story. And in that context, Arthas did appear in shadowlands. He isn’t a real, existing character with story to tell anymore. We’re just seeing some of the prominent people whose lives he affected find closure.
This would’ve been god damn amazing. Just imagine that Mueh’zala model as a raid boss surrounded by creepy voodoo and possessed dead wild gods. Mueh’zala is just creepier than the Jailer. The jailer is like a demon Hunter trying to be edgy, Mueh’zala just had the villain charm.
