People speak to a spec being OP when it’s in the hands of a player who’s skill-capped or very nearly skill-capped. Spriests have a very large skill ceiling. You’re not going to see the results you hear about simply by dabbling in it, truth be told.
Spriests have an insane amount of utility (improved mass dispel existing effectively renders rets out of the meta) instant CC, and damage.
There’s basically just too much all contained within one spec.
Well, that’s part of your problem right there.
Various shadow priests have their talent build preferences. Most of them look fairly similar, with the below talents being the ones we typically see taken or not taken:
- Deathspeaker
- pain of death (as a result of deathspeaker)
- Damnation
- Mind Devourer
- idol of N’zoth
- Insidious Ire
- Inescapable Torment
- psychic link
- Maddening touch (niche, and debatable. I’ve personally never run it. It maaaaay become better when we have our 2pc and DP’s damage goes up a lot, thus increasing the value of insanity generation)
Personally, the build I’m spec’d into right now has been my favorite.
Typically you’d adjust the above depending on what you need. If you’re playing with a rogue who would prefer more targets to be rotting, you might look for talents like psychic link, deathspeaker, and pain of death.
If you’re playing with an affl lock and it feels like a lot of targets are low but you can’t kill them, you might go for something like inescapable torment and insidious ire to beef up your single target.
Whether you’re able to cast more frequently or not may also inform the talents you choose.
As an example, inescapable requires disruption to your existing rotation as your priorities change while mindbender is active. It may require you to hard cast mind blast, which may not be feasible at all times.
No one plays y’shaarj any more. Don’t give bad advice, please.
