Shadow priest question

Hey, when to comes to being a shadow priest, since I main one TBC classic.

Is spell penetration useful to some extent? I found having around 30 does pretty well at negating getting resisted but I wonder if I’m wasting my energy with that and just go full int with the gems.

Additionally, is our purpose to be a mana battery in raids? I often worry about my dps not being high but I have been informed that my dps isn’t expected to be very high anyway compared to that of a mage/Hunter/lock. I’m just there to serve as a mana pool because of vampiric touch, and having a spell power offensively at 1000, I’ve haven’t had a single word said to me about DPS.

Opinions?

To some extent, yes; but not a huge amount. Some mobs will have shadow resist, but most won’t.

Yes.

You can feel free to increase your DPS as much as you can; both for your own experience and because it generates more mana. But no one cares if you’re the bottom DPS, and unless the players of certain other classes are incredibly bad, you’ll never be #1.

Thank you so much for the detailed response.

I guess I’ll just focus on building my spellpower as high as I can and perhaps sacrifice spell penetration for crit rate.

Crit rate is bad on shadow.

In fact a lot of your bis items for raid are Of Shadow Wrath greens and blues.

You use spellsyrike set because a meta gem is pointless on shadow as dots and flay cant crit.

Your kara bis pieces are off the Beast boss right by the entrance and it has to roll straight shadow spell power.

I’d recommend this wowhead guide.

https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/guide/shadow-priest-dps-karazhan-best-in-slot-gear-burning-crusade-classic-wow

there is nowhere saying to go after spell pen.
spell pen gear isn’t even easy to acquire.
Just follow the wowhead guide, you’ll be fine.

I think you should ignore spell pen. It may work on like the same amount of resistance as your talents already cover (mainly the resistance that comes from level difference between you and the target). Also as a gearing rule, you are OK with getting resisted if you gear for Eye of Mag. So the only reason to get that tiny bit of spell pen is going out the window.

Finally, people always talk big game, but no one will clear the Kara basement for you. There is all talk, and then raid logging.

Which sucks cuz it has like 3 bis items for shadow

A group I did for a couple of week would do animal bosses, but man it just takes way too much time for like a .4% chance to even drop the piece you need. It’s a really good piece but man it’s honestly not really worth it.

Yeah, its worth it to the shadow priest tho as its bis even next phase.

All 3 items are phase 1 and 2 bis.

But i get the group not wanting to do it, takes an extra 10 minutes kekw

Well the good thing is I have a guild group who 100% clears Kara every week and we do not ignore anything.

Probably because we intend on taking down TK, and Lady Vashj next phase.

But I appreciate all the responses and thoughts. It gives me a lot to think about and prep myself for.
