I recently boosted a shadow priest and went into ramparts, literally every trash pull I’d dot everything up then be and 40% mana…couple mind flays and a mind blast and I would be oom.
Is this normal or just because of the bad boost gear. Ty.

It’s because of the bad gear. Mana is a legitimate issue if you boosted your toon.
Thankfully, there are a supply of greens to choose from as you complete quests to make this easier on you. You can also go to the AH and buy some greens that are undeniably better than the ones you started with.
Ok Thankyou, which gear slots should I prioritise? And I’m guessing intel and spirit stats?.
Mainly wanting to hear from fellow shadow priests as to how mana issues are and leveling smoothness in TBC.
Thankyou
Make sure you have spirit tap. it helps a lot. Spirit is pretty huge for sustain especially questing.
Sorcerer gear has stam, intel, raw spell power. There’s also one that has spirit, int and spellpower too. When it comes to placeholder greens to use until you get better upgrades, those are the best until you replace them with quest/dungeon stuff.
Once you get gear upgrades and learn to manage your mana it’ll get better. I still find myself drinking regularly in dungeons though, Dots eat up a lot of mana and they represent the biggest chunk of your damage.
Don’t DoT non-elite mobs or any mob that dies super quick and always prioritize Vampiric Touch over SW:P if you’re starving on mana.
Also, as mentioned above, make sure to get 5 points into Spirit Tap and focus on finishing off mobs. It only triggers if you were the one to deliver the killing blow. Once you get SW:D it gets a lot easier to maintain a good spirit tap uptime.
It’s the gear, mostly.
Spamming SWP is also probably not very efficient for lvling dungeons. You’re sacrificing VT mana return for long term aoe dmg, which doesn’t pay off because they die too quick.
Mageblood/mana oil/nightfin soup
That should give you a solid chunk of mp5 to work with for now.
go do some introduction quests. the first zone drops a lot of pretty good gear. and then go into dungeons with those
just rank 1 mindflay spam for shadow weaving and top it off with a max rank mind blast ggez
Yeah it was garbage for me too and I have BWL/AQ gear. Its either you go OOM or you do laughable damage, pick one. Once you get Death itll be easier to sniper last hits to get Spirit Tap until you get the pet. Thats it tho, try to Snipe last hits or drink every 2-3 packs.
Mana! Mana! Doo dooo doodoo Doo
yah you will have to bring 100+ water a dungeon. it doesn’t get better at 70 either unless you have shadowfiend up
Is this gear working now or are the stats still broken?
People are reporting it working since yesterday.
NICE!! Thanks, this helps my alts a bit; that gear is insane.
Short pulls. Mindblast mind flay. Large pulls. Rank 4 swp or rank 5. Embrace vamp 1 target and pump into it. Double mob pulls or triple. Swp vamp. If they are stronger mobs. Otherwise getthose kill snipes etc. I drink typically every 3 pulls. Or 1 massive pull. If you play with casters tell them to let u have 1 mob. That mob is ur battery to feed the whole team as well as urself. This was leveling up with some high warlord and rest necropile dungeon gear.
Surprised people actually helped the OP and not berate him for boosting. There are some nice people here afterall.
What has been said here about gear is true, but mana issues aren’t fully solved until you have enough talent points for meditation in the discipline tree. What you are experiencing is completely normal.
I boosted my priest and mana issues will be a thing unless you are shadow for spirit tap. Even then, you will still have a lot of issues.
Fixes:
Best fix: Get tons of Spirit!
If you are a shadow – Spirit Tap and get Meditation. It’s better than Vampiric touch early on. If you focus on spirit, mediation becomes a bigger boon for you.
I have a ton of spirit now on my 65 sp with good gear form dungeons. I don’t oom as much anymore.
Mind you, once you start switching targets a lot, your mana will drain. The best way to cycle mana is to just focus one unit at a time and always try to get the killing blow in dungeons for spirit tap. One unit at a time between spirit taps. Once you get Shadow word: Death. This will be easyer for you.
Same rule for questing. One unit at a time between spirit tap. Once you have enough spirit, you can fight with your spirit tap active and never lose mana (even gain some).
Currently right now, as long as i focus one unit at a time, I gain some mana back from spirit taps while fighting.
Issue: Spirit gear tends to focus a lot on healing power. You want to prioritize spirit gear that give your spell power. But no worries. I have like 260ish Spell power and 500ish healing power. I still kill stuff stupidly fast. No issues my end.
you asnwered yourself
your mana return is based on damage
terrible gear = terrible damage = terrible regen
