Why do we have a cap on our aoe when others’ aoe are limitless? Why am I limited to 12 enemies and others get to just blast away whatever is in their radius?
Yes, I know I can manually dot adds on top of it but that takes time. It just doesn’t seem fair. What’s Blizzard’s rationale for capping us? Can someone explain it to me?

The issue for me isnt the cap itself. Its the point that we cant actually do AoE without or DoTs up on targets.
We got no AoE spender, and we’re only doing our ST damage spread on the targets we dotted.
At this point I just wish they removed PL and gave us something else, and a AoE spender atleast.
Dot 6 on the pull dot 12 with crash. Works fine if it takes 6-8s to gather all the mobs. Does not work so when you need to reapply dots or if there are lots of worthless mobs.
same reason mind sear had to be capped back in the day, it was just OP. Also I believe almost every aoe in the game has some sort of cap.
Blizzards way of thinking. If we don’t tightly control Psychic Link then SP DPS will be out of control. It’s the same reason they nerf Psyhic Link so much whenever the spec gets a little too high proformance
I think you have to have psychic link be sqrt scaling beyond 8 targets or something if shadow crash was uncapped.
That’d be alright in my opinion.
Adding on to this a little bit, Shadow Priest suffers a lot during larger pulls in Mythic+. The first pulls in Gambit and Ara Kara are great examples. This can sometimes be mitigated if its possible to manually put DoTs on 5 targets and Shadow Crash doesn’t bug out and reapply DoTs instead of applying DoTs on a new target.
I think Shadow Crash applying to 8 targets would help but more importantly, allowing Psychic link to apply to all targets hit by Shadow Crash, even with reduced effectiveness would see Shadow Priests handle very large pulls much better.
It would be nice having it on up to 8 targets. Or reverse how Misery works and make SWP apply VT.
Algathars is coming back too, can’t wait for the plant boss where you can’t dot all the adds that spawn
The target cap is a lazy band-aid fix for balancing Psychic Link. The correct balance fix would be to adjust Psychic link so that it’s duplicated/dispersed damage is affected by the number of targets it’s affecting.
If that change were ever implemented, then there’s no “balancing harm” in letting Shadow Crash/Tentacle spread to all affected targets.
Edit: Similar deal with proc chances and other effects which trigger off DoT damage.
