Why does it look so much better in Classic than now? The casting animation, the bolt itself, the sound effects. All from 2004 and they’re beating 2018 animation/sound effects. smh.
To be fair, it does actually look more like a bolt now, instead of shadowface.
I hate to break it to you, but these sorts of grievances aren’t stuff that ‘everyone’ agrees on.
I personally like majority of the updated animations and spells. This to me is the same as people claiming the old horribly blurry texture stretched race models where somehow better then the more modern clean, higher def models. I just can’t understand that sort of disconnect.
Similar thing with the hate for shadow form, I love the current shadow form vs the old one, the old one just looks dated and ‘meh’.
I’m personally not much of a fan of the new SB animation either. It looks flimsy and thin, whereas the old shadowbolt looked like it had a punch to it.
But totally agree that not everyone agrees when it comes to cosmetics. Something like this could be helped with a glyph, perhaps.
Yeah it’s too purple and sparkly and seems to lack hustle.
I complained about the new shadowbolt so much on the beta and they never changed it. It’s unfortunate but it looks like we’ll be stuck with for the foreseeable future. They also ruined demon bolt. It used to look incredible and now it looks so pixelated and watered down.
Definitely prefered the older demonbolt.
I’ve been pitching this idea since Cata - Old spell effects returned as glyphs - and it has yet to happen sadly. Shame too because it’s not only easy to do (especially as they’ve put back in all the old animations for Classic), it also increases the value of Inscription that has all but been wiped out since combat glyphs were removed.
Remember incinerate used to be a wave of actual fire? Now it’s a puny spark.
Chaos bolt used to be an awesome huge dragon head.
Definitely a step backwards.
Every time I see a spell effect update, animation update, etc all I can think of is when they nerfed the glorious tyranny enchant. It used to glow a lot more and they toned it down so people who play on typewriters could play the game.
That and how they’re so obsessed with screen clutter in raids even though they can make it so only you see your spell effects now.
Why not at least glyph the old one, though? I guess I’m really happy for everyone who likes their Fel-sparkles… but for those of us who like to look menacing it kind of sucks. Although I suppose the animation is appropriate for how much damage it does.
This is probably something we all can agree on, that old demonbolt was one of the best animations ever put into the game, despite occasional ground clipping.
Idk, I very much prefer the new shadow bolt. The skull was decent but it was just a flying skull. Same with all the new animations really. The only one I would have a gripe about is the small size of incinerate but even then it’s pretty meh for me on a priority list.
Okay, and the new shadowbolt is just a small blob of bad pixelated particle effects that completely changed how an iconic ability looked instead of just upgrading the spell effect.
sorry, a black skull aint that iconic to me fam, didn’t mean to hurt ya, it aint really special. It’s more “classic” than iconic. It’s just something that existed for a long time.
Something that existed for the entire lifespan of the game up until BFA and was the only bolt spell that had a skull, yeah I would and many others would say that it was iconic. Now it’s just a watered down spriest blob with blocky, pixelated sparkles that looks like it belongs in minecraft
They just outright changed a spell effect from the ground up that had been in the game since classic instead of brushing it up with modern graphics. And they don’t even give the option to let us change it back with a glyph even though they “reworked” the glyph system to have cosmetic options for spells.
They should’ve done what they did in cata and just added more to the skull instead of removing it.
Like I said: “It’s more “classic” than iconic. It’s just something that existed for a long time.” It’s okay for it to have sentimental value due to it’s length with you but to pretend it’s quality wise something special and an iconic move because of it is kinda going above and beyond. Just had to google image to make sure I wasn’t remembering another spell and no, it’s literally just one of their skull models painted purple see through with a plain old bold purple/black line behind it with the occasional 10p sparkle. I mean it’s even cool to say you like it better but “iconic” just isn’t that, idk what else to say. A skull recolor and a black line just isn’t what I see most people put their bar to be an iconic thing.
I’m down to lose a couple edgy to be edgy points. We get it, it’s a warlock. My horses have skulls on them , my sets have skulls om them, a couple of my icons have skulls on them, I shouldn’t be competing with DEATH knights for who can fit the most skulls in their class.
and tbh, it just doesn’t even make sense either. I always wondered why my warlock that is supposedly losing sanity with every cast in the heat of the moment is also expending that same energy to perfectly craft his void energy into a pretty skull before it explodes lol. You would think instead of crafting a skull he would just use excess energy to make the actual bolt bigger which is what they did.
lol they didn’t even create it. They literally copy-pasted Void Bolt’s animation and changed the colors slightly. That’s it. It’s the exact same thing as Void Bolt.
You’re comparing two different things, though. The old cast was cooler. This one’s just a blurry blobby bolt.
Agree. plus a lot of the new race designs are so much different art direction wise than the old ones. It’s not just about the resolution of the models, they made so many races look ridiculously over the top cartoony compared to the old models.
