Recently, while connecting to OCE servers (e.g., Frostmourne) from Taiwan, I’ve encountered severe and persistent lag issues that render certain dungeons nearly unplayable.
A GM directed me to post here, and I believe this issue may not be related to my personal connection.
Additionally, I found this post from another player, describing what appears to be a very similar issue — significant lag spikes when connecting from Asia to OCE servers — further suggesting that this is not an isolated case .
Issue Description:
In specific dungeon areas, there is prolonged, abnormal lag lasting several minutes, during which casting any abilities becomes impossible. The only workaround is to force close the game (Alt+F4) and relog.
This isn’t random — the issue has occurred consistently in the same dungeon areas across multiple runs:
Operation: Floodgate
- Played two separate Mythic+ runs (different party members).
- Both runs experienced severe lag in the areas around the second boss and the final boss.
- One run had another party member experiencing the exact same issue in the same location, suggesting a possible server-side bug rather than a routing or connection issue.
Darkflame Cleft
- Severe lag occurred in the area after the first boss (trash mobs) and around the second boss.
- I didn’t complete the dungeon, so I can’t confirm if other areas also have the same issue.
Cinderbrew Meadery
- Severe lag begins from the corridor after the first boss room leading to the bee boss, and continues through to the final boss.
I ran this dungeon twice:
- First run: Lag began in the corridor after the first boss and continued through to the end.
- Second run: I prepped a VPN beforehand. As soon as the lag started in the same area, I Alt+F4’d, enabled my VPN, and re-entered the dungeon. After that, I had no lag for the rest of the run.
- During this same second run, a US-based party member also experienced severe lag starting at the exact same location (corridor after first boss), but he did not use a VPN and was unable to play properly for the rest of the dungeon.
Troubleshooting Attempted:
- Tested with Chunghwa Telecom broadband (home network) and mobile hotspot – issue occurred on both.
- Ran
ping 168.95.1.1
to verify local network – stable results, ~20ms latency. - Used Surfshark VPN connected to a Melbourne server – latency increased to ~250–400ms, but all skill usage worked smoothly and the severe lag disappeared entirely.
Additional Observations:
Without VPN:
- In-game latency shows as green (~150–200ms), but in affected areas, skills won’t cast and there’s multi-minute unresponsiveness.
- Outside of the problem areas, gameplay is very smooth, regardless of whether grouped with OCE or US players.
With VPN:
- When connected to an OCE group, latency increases to ~250ms, but gameplay is smooth and stable.
- When grouped with US players, latency rises to ~400ms (yellow), and skills have noticeable delay, which is expected due to the distance.
- No abnormal lag occurs anywhere while using a VPN.
Key Takeaways:
- Players from non-Australian regions (Taiwan, Korea, Japan, even the US) may experience severe lag in specific dungeon areas when connected to OCE instance servers.
- The issue is not just poor personal connection quality, as using a VPN completely eliminates the lag. This suggests a potential routing problem or server-side bug.
- This affects any group led by an OCE player (i.e., the instance runs on OCE infrastructure), regardless of the other players’ regions.
Request for Developer Assistance:
- Please investigate whether the affected dungeon areas have server-side issues or resource bottlenecks.
- Check if the routing path for non-AU players connecting to OCE instances is functioning as intended.
- If confirmed to be a bug or server configuration issue, please consider fixing or optimizing the affected systems.
I’d be happy to provide additional data (e.g., video, trace routes, logs) if needed. Thank you very much for your attention!
