Aside from the fact that that isn’t true, they put a notice on the launcher last night.
meaning , there was no countdown til server shuts down.
They start announcing it with system messages 15 minutes beforehand.

It is possible to miss those warnings. But Blizzard tried to go out of their way to make sure that you do not. And also with an unplannned server disconnect you have a very high chance of dying. But when Blizzard shuts it down, they reset that server so there is zero chance you would log back in dead if you were not dead already. Even if a mob had you at .5% HP and Blizzard restated the servers, you would log back in alive and with the mobs not attacking you. They reset to their original spawn points and some have a bunch of spawn points that they cycle through. They go out of their way to make sure that you do not die when they are the ones who disconnect you.
